Her gaze was just too pure, and Marlon didn't like that kind of purity. Whenever he encountered something so untainted, he felt an uncontrollable urge to ruin it.
Just like the feeling he had when he first saw Athena on TV.
Now, the power was in his hands, and if he wanted to destroy something, all it would take was a flick of his fingers.
Athena's head rested gently on his shoulder, a far cry from the sultry demeanor she had in the abandoned warehouse that day, yet it unexpectedly tugged at his heartstrings.
"Hey, what’s for dinner?"
"What do you want? I’ll have the chef whip it up for you."
Marlon's gaze darkened as he moved to sit on the nearby couch.
Athena was like his little shadow, following him and settling down beside him.
"Anything’s fine."
She sprawled across his lap, staring up at him without blinking.
"Hey, did I start hanging out with you just because of your pretty face?"
She reached up, her fingers tracing his jawline before moving to his Adam's apple.
This teasing was maddening. Marlon felt as though something had slipped into his heart, like a feather tickling him incessantly. He wanted to turn away, but he couldn't resist the allure of Athena's touch.
They stayed like that until the chef brought out dinner.
Athena had hoped Marlon would sit and eat with her, but he suddenly announced he was heading out, leaving her to dine alone.
She didn’t press the issue.
As Marlon got into his car, he couldn't shake off the surreal events of the day. How did things end up like this? He rubbed his temples, just as someone invited him for drinks, and he decided to join them.
Coincidentally, Murphy was there too.
Murphy, with his ever-present glasses, raised an eyebrow when he saw Marlon join the group.
"Marlon, we've known each other for years. Even if she's your sister, if you fall for her, you'll go after her. That's just who you are. Societal norms are like paper to you. I’ll bet you now, if you realize your feelings, you’ll act on them regardless."
Marlon squinted, acknowledging that Murphy did know him well.
Indeed, societal norms meant nothing to him. If he ever found himself truly needing Athena, he wouldn't hesitate to keep her close.
Just as that thought crossed his mind, the door to the private room swung open, and in walked Tyler.
Tyler had planned to have dinner with Athena tonight, but when he got home, she was nowhere to be found. His calls went unanswered, and he only learned from the staff that Athena had gone to the Keller family.
Seeing Marlon there, he asked, "Athena went to the Keller family?"
Marlon nodded, not a hint of guilt in his expression. "My grandma’s been unwell. I asked her to help out for a month. Why, are you worried?"
Tyler was worried indeed—worried about Athena's identity being exposed, and worried she might have made a rash decision. But hearing it was for Grandma Edith put him at ease.
At least for Grandma Edith's sake, Marlon wouldn’t take things too far.
