Dear Ex-wife Marry Me novel (Maja) novel Chapter 2248

It felt as if a bolt of lightning had struck Maggie square in the head.

Her foot slammed down on the gas pedal in shock, the car lurching to a stop right in the middle of traffic. Horns blared, and a couple of traffic cops were already heading her way, but Maggie barely registered any of it.

“Are you sure this news is real?” she demanded into the phone, desperation creeping into her voice.

“It’s true. The Keller family has already made an announcement. Maybe Marlon blocked you, so you didn’t see his Facebook post?”

That last sentence hit Maggie like a slap. Of course Marlon had blocked her.

She took a shaky breath and hung up without another word, immediately dialing Grandma Edith.

No answer.

Maggie’s heart sank. If Edith wasn’t picking up, the news was probably true.

No wonder Grandma Edith had always favored Athena. She’d even gone so far as to call off the wedding because of her.

So this was it.

This was what it all came down to.

Maggie felt like fate was playing the cruelest joke on her. Did Grandma Edith recognize Athena at the ceremony? Is that why she stopped everything?

Damn it!

She cursed over and over again in her mind, but it was too late. There was no fixing things now.

She and Marlon were truly finished. The thought of all the things she’d said to Athena at the church made her stomach twist—Athena must despise her now.

And if Athena decided to get back at her?

She couldn’t just sit around and wait for it to happen. She had to act first.

Kerwin.

A sly smile crept onto Maggie’s lips, and then she even laughed out loud.

“You’re here. Sit down.”

Maggie didn’t let it get to her. She sat and glanced around the room.

Edith noticed. Her tone grew even colder. “Marlon isn’t here.”

Maggie drew her gaze back with a pleasant smile. “Grandma, I’ve already apologized to Athena. I know you’re not happy to see me, but I really do have something important to tell you today.”

“Well, go on then.”

Watching Edith’s icy demeanor, Maggie seethed inside. Just wait, you old witch, she thought. Once you hear what Athena was up to in high school, how she almost got involved with Marlon’s own brother—let’s see how you react to that.

“Athena and I went to high school together. She was head over heels for someone back then—her boyfriend, as a matter of fact.”

Edith’s brow furrowed. If Maggie was just here to spread rumors about Athena’s private life, she could save her breath.

“Grandma, Athena’s boyfriend’s name was Kerwin. You wouldn’t know him, but Marlon might remember. When Marlon was living abroad, he actually had someone go after Kerwin.”
