“That should have happened long ago. Your life must be going well, now that you have officially begun living as a family of three. Just ignore your mother-in-law and try to avoid interacting with her. I knew from my first glance of her that she wasn’t a nice person.”
Naya smiled and said nothing. An intellectual and kind-hearted person like her would never speak ill of her mother-in-law behind her back, no matter how horrible the latter was.
After the dessert shop closed for the evening, Arianne and Tiffany took a cab to the hospital. Jackson hadn’t shown up at all today, but they ended up meeting him at the hospital. Mark was there too.
The ward instantly grew lively. Eric sat cross-legged on the bed, happily munching on an apple that Jackson had peeled for him. “How kind of you guys, but this isn’t the first time my problem has acted up. It’s nothing serious, so there’s no need for you guys to stay too long. The girl you introduced me to took really good care of me. I have to give her a raise!”
Tiffany was brimming with pride, speaking animatedly, “But of course! Ari and I handpicked her! I think you’ll be discharged from the hospital in just a few days. From now on, you’ll have to take care of your ‘precious’ body and watch what you eat.”
Eric curled his lips, “Actually, I just need to avoid drinking in the future and make some time for a surgery, then I can continue living as I am without much of a problem.”
Surgery? It was only at this moment did Arianne and Tiffany realize how serious the situation was. All this time, they had thought Eric simply had a weak stomach and needed to be more careful with his diet. They didn’t expect it to be so serious that he was required to undergo a surgery.
Jackson patted Eric on his shoulder, “Alright, I’ll come by again tomorrow. I’m so exhausted, I’m dying to go back and rest.”
“Ari and I are exhausted, so we’ll be leaving too. Take care of yourself.”
After saying bye calmly, Tiffany dragged Arianne out of the ward.
Jackson quickly caught up with her, “What’s the matter with you? Why do you seem like you have a problem with me?”
Tiffany replied angrily, “Where have you been all day today? Are you so busy that you can’t even send a text or make time for a short call? If you’re that exhausted, go back to the hotel and rest up. I’ll stay with Ari tonight.”
Jackson’s countenance changed slightly as he signaled to Mark frantically with his eyes.
Sighing in resignation, Mark dragged Arianne away. “I’ll see you home.”
Arianne wanted to refuse, but suddenly realized his intention: he was trying to give Tiffany and Jackson some privacy. Arianne didn’t want to be caught up between a lovers’ fight either, so it was better for her to leave right now. They needed to solve their problem by themselves.
Arianne was shocked, “What! How could this have happened! I knew things wouldn’t go that smoothly between Jackson and Tiffie! Given how much of a playboy Jackson was, a screw up is inevitable! I wonder how things will end up if the child truly turns out to be his! It’s about time that karma hits him, considering all that he’s done in the past!”
Compared to her, Mark didn’t seem to have a care in the world, “The result isn’t out yet, so don’t go jumping to conclusions. I don’t think Jackson’s past is that unsightly. He’s a normal man, what’s wrong with having a richer experience in that area of life? He’s never double-timed anyone either, so there’s nothing shameful about his actions. Besides, he already stopped that kind of lifestyle, so don’t be so indignant.”
Arianne retorted, out of fear for Tiffany, “You are a man, of course you’d think it’s normal for Jackson to have had that type of lifestyle! Both of you basically have the same mindset!”
Mark was a little at getting accusations hurled at him out of the blue, “Don’t lump us together, I’ve never done any of that.”
Arianne retorted out of habit, “Surely, you must have!”
Mark felt a headache brewing in his head. Women were really troublesome when they were being unreasonable.
“Okay fine, I did! Are you happy now? The past couple of decades of my life revolved around you, what makes you think I had that kind of time? Stop spouting nonsense!”
