The words hit Dan like a punch to the gut. He was furious.
He and Yvonne had just swiped a ton of stuff from Black Gate over the past few days, and now here was Xander, sitting across from him, talking about their supposed losses?
Seriously? After everything that had gone down, did anyone lose more than Black Gate?
Dan was so mad, he could barely breathe.
Xander said, "You think grabbing all that stuff didn’t cost us manpower and resources? If we just hand them back, aren't we the ones taking the bigger hit?"
Dan’s jaw dropped.
Was Xander actually trying to be reasonable here? No way that argument would fly anywhere.
Dan snapped, "Xander!"
"From now on, if it’s about Susanna, talk to Hull or Ronald. Don’t call me."
He'd said the same thing to Yvonne. Then he hung up.
Dan just stared at his phone in disbelief, feeling like something snapped inside him—hard.
Not their responsibility anymore. Losses.
Those two thoughts kept echoing in his head, making it hard to think straight.

Meanwhile, with Xander and Yvonne—
Xander braced his strong arms on either side of the old armchair, boxing Yvonne in.
His presence was overwhelming, and Yvonne tried to wriggle away instinctively.
"Wh-what are you doing?"
Xander grinned. "Getting cold feet?"
"As if!"
She’d just told Hull on the phone, didn’t she? Whatever Hull needed, she’d do it. Hull wanted them to keep going, so—yeah, she’d keep going.
Xander asked, "You sure you want to keep hitting them?"
"Of course! What else am I supposed to do? My brother says go, I go!"
From the moment things got messy, she knew whose side she was on.
As for Dan... after what happened years ago, he was long gone from Yvonne’s definition of ‘family.’
