Miriam desperately wanted to fly back to Portis City, but her flight status remained indefinitely delayed. The crushing anxiety of being stuck, combined with the freezing temperatures, finally took its toll. She collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
Once admitted, she was hooked up to an IV and given a heavy dose of medication. Her mind spun wildly from the high fever.
Around noon, Tegan James finished her shift and was heading to the cafeteria when she spotted Miriam in the hallway.
"Miriam?"
Hearing her name, Miriam looked up. Her eyes instantly welled with tears.
"What are you doing here?" Tegan asked in surprise. "When I left Portis City, I heard you were getting married today."
Even though Miriam worked for Uriah, Tegan had always liked her. Whenever there was a conflict between Tegan and Leslie Horner, Miriam always subtly sided with Tegan. Every time Uriah dragged his sister away, leaving Tegan behind, it was Miriam who stayed by her side. Through all the crushing loneliness Uriah had caused her, Miriam had been a quiet source of support.
Miriam sniffled loudly. "My wedding is ruined."
Tegan stared at her in shock. "What?"
"I want to murder Uriah Horner, that absolute bastard!" Miriam cried, tears freely tracking down her flushed cheeks.
Even though Gideon was the one who cheated, the whole situation was a disaster. Just as Harper had pointed out, it was the most absurd wedding in history. The bride was stranded in a foreign country chasing after her boss's girlfriend, while the groom was busy in bed with another woman. Miriam was probably the only person in the world who was this dedicated to her job.
Hearing Miriam call Uriah a bastard rendered Tegan speechless. She entirely agreed with the sentiment, but still...
"He is your boss," Tegan pointed out gently. Was it really a good idea to scream that in public? Tegan had never seen such a rebellious assistant before.
Miriam sniffled again, looking utterly pathetic. "It doesn't matter. I know you won't tell him."
Her eyes were puffy and her face was flushed from the cold and the constant stream of tears. Seeing her look so heartbroken made Tegan's chest tighten with sympathy. Miriam had always been such a sharp, capable, and fierce woman while working for Uriah. Seeing her like a wounded bird was completely jarring.
Tegan sat down next to her on the bench and stayed quiet, letting her vent.
