“So, what—you think if she just copies the outside, it’s enough to replace her on the inside?” Yvonne scoffed. Just how unhinged was Berry? She’d kept her head down for all these years, and now this stunt?
And honestly, Ronald knew Stella so well that he could recognize every strand of her hair. Did Berry really think just replicating Stella’s face would be enough to fool him? She was seriously underestimating Ronald.
Xander shook his head. “Berry isn’t just getting plastic surgery at Novaderma, you know. She’s imitating Stella’s every move—her walk, her mannerisms, even her wardrobe. You get what she’s after now?”
“I get it,” Yvonne said, her tone turning cold. She wasn’t slow. With Xander laying it out like that, it couldn’t be any clearer.
Xander watched her catch on instantly, and it stung a little. Why was it so easy for her to believe this, but when he’d told her he was the man from that night, she wouldn’t trust a word?
Yvonne’s irritation boiled over. “Damn it, have these people still not learned their lesson?” Had they already forgotten the way Ronald dealt with the Schultzes last time? And they dared come poking around again?
Xander’s eyes darkened. “There’s more—Berry is Mona’s daughter.”
Yvonne’s eyes widened in shock.
Wait—what?
How had it ended up involving her?
Yvonne had never thought much of Xander’s stepmother. Before everything with Regina went south three years ago, Mona was the queen bee among the society ladies—obnoxiously flashy about it, too. After Regina’s scandal, she’d toned it down but always tried to sink her claws into whatever was left of the Schultz fortune. There was a greed in her eyes that made Yvonne sick.
“This is getting complicated,” Xander said. “We need to get back to Ferrowland, and fast.”
“Your Schultz family… the whole lot of you are insane,” Yvonne muttered, shooting Xander a look that said she’d just about reached her limit. Now that Berry turned out to be Mona’s kid, things just got harder to stomach.
Xander gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “How about this—when we get back, let’s just deal with the Schultzes once and for all.”
