Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 92

Catching the hatred flashing in her eyes, Evander's brows drew together, his expression shadowed by something complex. "If you have something to say, let's take this outside."

"I'm not going anywhere."

"Charlotte." Evander's tone hardened, the warning unmistakable. "Don't make me repeat myself."

Her eyes were rimmed red, all her pent-up hurt, resentment, and anger igniting at the mention of everything Hiram had suffered. She didn't care about the pain in her wrist where he gripped her; her gaze was icy as she looked past Evander to where Tricia hovered behind him.

"I tried to talk to you, tried to work something out—I gave you a chance to compromise. But you? Why did you have to push me?"

"Dr… Dr. Sterling, what are you talking about? How did I push you?" Tricia's voice was all innocent confusion.

Evander's patience had reached its end. "Charlotte, what exactly are you trying to do?"

"What am I trying to do?" Charlotte let out a bitter laugh, yanking her arm free. Her palm brushed sharply past the edge of his jaw as she raised her voice, raw with emotion. "I should be asking you that! All I wanted was a fair trial, one where neither of you interfered. Is that really so much to ask?"

Tears spilled down her face as her anger spilled over. "Hiram was beaten so badly at the police station that he's now fighting for his life in the hospital! Don't tell me this wasn't your doing—who else could've arranged something like that?"

Evander froze, his face darkening. "What did you just say?"

Charlotte wiped her tears away, her voice cold with sarcasm. "You're quite the actor, aren't you, Mr. Howard?"

"A suspect is assaulted in a police station, right under the officers' noses—not a single person tries to stop it. Why do you think that is?"

"If you hadn't given the order, who would dare go that far? Hiram had already accepted the verdict, but that wasn't enough for you. You wanted him to pay with his life, just to appease Tricia?"

A strange tightness seized Evander's chest. His lips pressed into a thin, grim line.

Tricia couldn't bring herself to meet Charlotte's gaze, shrinking back in silence.

After everything inside her had spilled out, Charlotte's face went blank. She looked at them both with icy resolve. "If he dies, I'll drag you both to hell with me."

She turned and stormed out of the hospital room.

Mrs. Fontaine chuckled, her tone ingratiating. "Then let me thank the future Mrs. Howard in advance!"

Hiram survived the emergency surgery, but he remained in the ICU, still unconscious and under observation.

Charlotte walked to the ICU doors, about to go in, when Xavier's agitated voice sounded behind her.

"This is a nightmare! That foolish boy threw away his whole future for her, and now look at us—our only son's lying there, and we don't even know if he'll wake up!"

Xavier's grief and regret were palpable.

Charlotte's mother, Rachel, sat quietly beside him for a long moment before speaking. "What's done is done. Complaining won't change anything now."

Xavier's voice trembled with old resentment. "I never should have agreed to let you bring her into this family."
