Director Fontaine's face darkened. "Charlotte, you might not care about your reputation, but the hospital certainly does!"
"Oh, so you do know the hospital's reputation matters? Funny, I almost thought you owned the place, with how well you're acting out this little drama."
"You—!"
"You little tramp, still trying to weasel your way out?" Mrs. Fontaine jabbed a finger at Charlotte, her voice sharp and shrill. "If you aren't seducing my husband, then what's with your file saying you're married? I already asked around—no one's ever seen your husband! And my husband admitted it himself: this so-called ‘husband' of yours is just him! You probably cooked up the whole ‘married' story so people wouldn't know you're shamelessly sleeping with a married man!"
Everyone who knew Charlotte was aware she was married, but no one had ever actually met her husband.
Now, with Mrs. Fontaine stirring the pot, some people started to believe her.
"Wow, this is wild. What does Dr. Sterling even see in him?"
"She always seemed so proper. Didn't think she was that type of woman."
As gossip rippled behind her, Tricia hid a sly smile. She was eager to see if Charlotte had the nerve to bring up her connection to Evander. No matter what Charlotte said, she was trapped—there was no way out of this mess now.
Charlotte shot Tricia a glance and was more certain than ever that Tricia was behind this whole scene.
"I do have a husband," Charlotte said calmly, "but it's not Director Fontaine. After all, we haven't even exchanged personal phone numbers. Is cheating usually done through company email now?"
Director Fontaine froze, then shot a panicked look at Tricia. He really hadn't thought about the phone numbers.
Tricia forced a smile. "Dr. Sterling, you don't need a number to have an affair…"
"But I don't even have Director Fontaine on my private WhatsApp," Charlotte shot back.
"Maybe you deleted him," Tricia retorted weakly.
She leaned in, speaking in a low voice only Charlotte could hear. "You don't want to make a scene and put the Dean in a difficult spot, do you?"
Charlotte's expression turned grim, but she said nothing.
Dean Chase glanced between Tricia and Charlotte. With Evander present, he thought better of pressing the issue and turned to him instead. "Mr. Howard, I'll head back to my office."
Evander gave a slight nod.
Once the Dean had gone, Tricia exchanged a look with the Fontaines.
They caught on immediately. Mrs. Fontaine stepped forward, grabbing Charlotte's arm despite her resistance. "We're not done here. Come on, let's sort this out outside!"
"And what exactly do you think we need to sort out?" Charlotte asked coldly.
