Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 567

At noon, Charlotte was having lunch with Lilith when she overheard colleagues at a nearby table chatting excitedly about getting paid. She pulled out her phone to check her bank notifications.

"Charlotte, did your salary come through?"

Charlotte took a sip of her soup. "I'm not taking a salary for the next six months."

"What?" Lilith stared at her in disbelief. "He's making you work for free?"

"I call it a voluntary contribution," she said with a small smile. "Professor Carstairs is in a tight spot right now. Just try to be understanding."

"Him? An heir to a fortune is in a tight spot?" Lilith paused as a thought struck her. "Then again, I guess it makes sense. I've even seen him at those cheap roadside diners, and he wears the same few outfits over and over. I was starting to wonder if he'd gone bankrupt."

Charlotte looked up. "How do you know he goes to roadside diners?"

"Well, you know, I just..." Lilith forced a smile. "We happen to live in the same area, by coincidence."

"You found a place?"

She nodded. "Karin helped me find it. It's a one-bedroom for fifteen hundred a month. Not bad."

"Karin is...?"

"That college student who works as Judd's assistant. He's a really nice guy."

Charlotte didn't recall the name, but she did remember a young, clean-cut university student with glasses who assisted Judd. He definitely fit the description of a recent graduate just entering the workforce.

And Lilith, also a recent graduate, was a bright, pretty, and likable young woman. They probably had a lot in common. It wouldn't be a surprise if she had no shortage of admirers. Still, it wasn't her place to pry into Lilith's personal life.

...

Inside a high-end restaurant that had been booked out for a private event, the atmosphere was quiet and serene.

Evander sat at a window table across from Caleb, who was elegantly holding a wine glass by its stem.

After Caleb left, Evander unhurriedly removed his mask and placed it on the table. Caleb was a sharp one. He'd guessed his identity but didn't expose it, even clarifying his neutral stance. Interesting.

Just then, his phone rang.

It was Natalie.

"Mr. Howard, there's been an incident with the Howard matriarch."

At the same time, in the Capital, Jacques Howard and Miranda Sutherland rushed to the hospital after learning the family matriarch had been admitted to the ICU. Jensen, his wife Ilse, and Genevieve arrived shortly after, their pace much more leisurely.

Neither group acknowledged the other, the distance between them palpable.

When the doctor emerged from the ICU, Jacques immediately went to him. "How is my mother?"

"The matriarch is suffering from drug poisoning," the doctor replied. "She is not out of danger yet."
