Seeing her earnest expression, Wesley’s gaze softened, and the deep frown on his forehead relaxed.
He was quiet for a moment, then bent down to pick up his racket bag. His voice was low but held a trace of reluctant acceptance. “A probationary period… fine. I won’t interfere with your decision. But you have to promise me that you’ll tell me, no matter what happens from now on. Otherwise, I’m really done with you.”
Charlotte linked her arm with his. “But you can’t tell dad, okay?”
He playfully pushed her head away with his finger. “I won’t. For now.”
In the days following Tobias’s scandal, the Lowe family spent a fortune trying to suppress the news. Though the articles were gone, it was a story that wouldn’t be forgotten for years. Word was that Emmett was so furious with his son that he planned to send him abroad, and the engagement with the Rayburn family was officially off. Emmett was a proud man, and with his son at the center of such a sordid affair, no respectable family would let their daughter marry him.
The cancellation of the wedding was a dream come true for Loretta.
When Charlotte came to visit her, Loretta’s joy was written all over her face. “Cousin Charlotte!”
Charlotte was taken aback for a second. “Cousin?”
Loretta nodded eagerly. “Of course! I’m a year younger than you, so I should be calling you sister now.”
This time, she was more than willing to say it.
Charlotte smiled, a little helplessly, and walked with her into the living room. Although she hadn't seen Loretta much since coming to Eldermere City, they had a natural chemistry, which felt like a kind of fate.
Charlotte mulled over the name. In all her time in Eldermere City, she still hadn’t met this mysterious “Uncle Shane.”
That afternoon, Wesley had just finished a meeting and was heading back to his office with Julian. As he opened the door, he saw that someone was already waiting on the sofa.
The man was casually fiddling with a glass on the coffee table. When he heard them enter, he slowly looked up. “Hey, long time no see.”
Julian froze, glancing at Wesley.
Wesley’s brow furrowed, but his face remained impassive as he walked into the room. “The Rayburn family is in chaos, and you couldn’t be bothered to show up. And now you decide to come back?”
