Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 556

Mr. Rayburn glanced at his bodyguard, who stepped to his side and whispered something in his ear. In an instant, Mr. Rayburn's entire expression darkened. He turned and shot a chilling glare at Mr. and Mrs. Lowe.

Before Mrs. Lowe and Emmett could even process the shift, Emmett’s phone rang. It was his secretary.

Tobias had been arrested soliciting a prostitute.

The news struck Emmett like a bolt of lightning. He shot to his feet. “What?”

He quickly ended the call and turned to Mr. Rayburn. “Let’s… postpone the wedding for now. We have a family matter to attend to.”

He and his wife scrambled out of the room, not daring to even glance at Mr. Rayburn's face as they fled.

From the moment they had arranged the marriage with the Rayburn family, they had forbidden Tobias from causing any scandals. Aside from the incident with Charlotte, he had been relatively clean.

But this time, Tobias’s scandal had exploded across Riverspire City, even going viral online.

Loretta didn't know what had happened until she saw the push notification on her phone. A secret smile played on her lips.

Tobias's scandal was sensational, to say the least.

Whatever social standing Emmett had painstakingly built over the years was wiped out overnight.

Rumor had it that Tobias wasn't just soliciting; he was with his so-called friends. When he was arrested, the bed was a tangle of men and women.

When the police raided the scene, Tobias was unconscious, having reportedly overdosed on a dangerous cocktail of illicit performance-enhancing drugs.

By the weekend, the scandal showed no signs of dying down.

Sitting in Evander's car, Charlotte scrolled through the news about the explosive scandal and frowned. “This wasn't your doing, was it?”

It seemed far too ruthless.

After this, Tobias would be a laughingstock in Riverspire City for the rest of his life.

Evander’s eyes crinkled. “Elliot arranged it, not me.”

Charlotte looked at him. “Elliot? He’s in Eldermere City too?”

He grunted in affirmation, then added after a moment of silence, “He is Zachary’s adopted son, after all.”

Charlotte paused, a flicker of understanding in her eyes. No wonder they’d had so much trouble verifying his identity.

Then a thought occurred to her, and she broke eye contact. “But Elliot's last name is Calvin. Your alias was Jason.”

He glanced at her, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Zachary never publicized Elliot’s name, to protect him. Elliot’s mother’s last name was Calvin, so he usually called him ‘Calvin.’ Everyone over there knew Zachary had an adopted son named Calvin, but who would know his full name?”

He hadn't ruled it out.

But…

“Cousin, whatever you do, don't just book everything out on your dates. Charlotte has everything she needs. She’s not like those other women who claim they want romance but really just want a man to throw money at them! She wants the experience! Remember, the experience!”

He had taken Lilith's advice to heart.

“If it were just the two of us, I was afraid you wouldn't feel comfortable.”

Charlotte stared at him, a flicker of confusion on her face. She had almost forgotten the old, domineering Evander. This man was a world apart, as if he’d been replaced by someone else entirely.

Suddenly, she reached out and pinched his cheek. “You’re not Evander. Who are you?”

Evander caught her hand, a look of fond exasperation on his face. He tucked her hand into his pocket, holding it tight. “I'm your blind and foolish ex-husband.”

From somewhere in the crowd, the click of a camera shutter captured the moment perfectly.

The two were watching a comedy film, and Evander hadn't expected Lilith to book something so dull... After sending Lilith a series of messages, he put his phone back in his pocket and didn't look at it again. Hearing the laughter from the people around him, he only managed a slightly awkward smile and then turned to look at Charlotte. Seeing her laugh at the movie's scenes, the furrows in his brow instantly relaxed.

In that moment, it all seemed worth it...
