Meanwhile, Charlotte and Evander arrived at an upscale restaurant. Surprisingly, he hadn't booked the entire place or even a private room, just a table for two in the main dining hall. It wasn't a weekend, so the restaurant was relatively quiet.
"Mommy, why is that man wearing a mask? Is he doing cosplay?" a little boy at the next table asked, pointing curiously at Evander.
His mother quickly shushed him, whispering, "Be quiet, honey. It's not polite to point."
A mischievous glint appeared in Charlotte's eyes. She glanced at Evander, then propped her chin on her hand and smiled at the boy. "You're right. Even though this uncle is a bit older, he loves to cosplay."
"My daddy loves it too! He and Mommy always play—"
The boy's words were cut short as his mother clapped a hand over his mouth. She gave them an embarrassed smile. "I'm so sorry, he just says whatever comes into his head. I hope we didn't interrupt you two."
Charlotte froze for a second.
Evander, however, seemed amused. "It's quite all right," he said. "Kids will be kids."
After the mother and son left, Charlotte pretended she hadn't heard the comment and focused on her meal. Evander watched her for a moment before speaking slowly, "That boy must be five or six, wouldn't you say?"
Charlotte looked up, confused.
His gaze met hers, a hint of regret in his gentle tone. "If we had a child sooner, he'd probably be about that age."
Her hand trembled. She stared at him in disbelief before looking away, her voice sharp with sarcasm. "You already treated Tricia's son like your own, so you've had your chance at being a father. Isn't that enough for you?"
Evander fell silent, realizing he'd said the wrong thing.
"Mr. Evander? What are you doing out here? We have private rooms available," the restaurant manager said, rushing over. He then turned to scold a nearby waiter, "Use your eyes! Weren't there rooms free tonight?"
"It's fine," Evander said calmly. "It doesn't matter where we sit. What matters is that Miss Rayburn enjoys a livelier atmosphere."
