As Charlotte and Wesley stepped into the living room, she glanced at the sofa next to Mr. Rayburn and, just as she expected, saw Mrs. Lowe and her son.
Tobias still had a bandage wrapped around his head, and he wore a coat over what looked like hospital pajamas. When he turned to glare at Charlotte, his face was contorted with deep resentment.
Charlotte ignored them and noticed the middle-aged woman sitting beside Mr. Rayburn. She looked to be around Kate's age, but to be seated so comfortably next to him…
Could this be the "trophy wife" Mr. Rayburn had married?
"You must be Charlotte. What a shame I was out of town for your welcome dinner and couldn't be there. I still need to get you a proper gift," the woman, Hulda, said with a smile.
Wesley and Charlotte took their seats. "That's very thoughtful of you. By the way, did Uncle not return with you?"
Hulda replied, "He's always been a free spirit. He dislikes these kinds of disputes."
"Alright, this isn't a Rayburn family reunion," Mrs. Lowe interrupted impatiently, setting her teacup down. She looked at Mr. Rayburn. "Sir, don't you think you owe the Lowe family an explanation? Your granddaughter returns and not long after, she cracks my son's head open. As the head of the family, you ought to deliver us some justice, don't you think?"
Mr. Rayburn calmly arranged the expensive tea set on the table. "Wesley, what are your thoughts?"
Kate, Quincy, and even Hulda all turned to look at Wesley.
Wesley gave Charlotte a reassuring glance before speaking. "The Lowes have some nerve, trying to shift the blame. Let's not forget that your son attempted to drug my sister and ruin her reputation. And now you want the Rayburns to give you justice? What about justice for my sister?"
Tobias's eyes darted away for a second, but Mrs. Lowe remained unfazed. "We drugged her? Do you have any proof? Besides, my son is the one who's injured!"
"So just because my sister wasn't physically harmed, she isn't a victim?"
Mrs. Lowe was speechless. It was clear that her usual theatrics wouldn't work on Wesley, so she shot a pleading look at Kate.
Kate smiled placatingly. "Well, what's done is done. Since we can't change the past, why not turn this into a happy occasion and have Tobias marry Lottie? It would be for the best, for Lottie's reputation and honor."
Quincy nodded in agreement.
Mr. Rayburn remained silent for a moment before looking at Mrs. Lowe. "And what do you think?"
Mrs. Lowe was inwardly pleased but put on a show of reluctance to save face. "Since things have come to this, if you give the word, I'll accept the marriage."
