Wesley picked up the photograph. It showed a man and a woman, and though the image was slightly blurry, he could still make out their profiles. He had long suspected their connection—a clear betrayal of allegiance—but had never found any proof. He never expected Caleb to hand it to him directly.

He looked up. "What's the meaning of this?"

"Consider it a gift. You don't need to promise me anything in return," Caleb said, raising his cup in a toast.

Wesley said nothing more. He pocketed the photograph and walked out of the lounge.

Later that afternoon, Judd left the research institute. Seeing a message from Charlotte with an address nearby, he followed the directions on his phone. After walking about a hundred yards, he saw her standing in front of a small restaurant, waving at him.

He calmly crossed the street and glanced at the kebab shop. "I thought you'd be treating me to a fancy dinner."

"Even fine dining gets old, don't you think? It's good to switch things up and give your taste buds a little excitement. Isn't that a kind of pleasure too?"

He chuckled. "I think you're the one who was craving this, aren't you?"

They found a table and sat down. While Charlotte pulled out her phone to order from the digital menu, Judd wiped the tabletop with a napkin, watching her.

"Aren't you going to look?" Charlotte asked.

"You can decide. I'm not a picky eater."

Charlotte ordered enough for the two of them. Soon, a young waitress came over, smiling. "Hi there. We have a special today—you get thirty percent off our dinner for two. Would you like to discuss it with your boyfriend?"

Charlotte's expression turned slightly awkward. "We're not a couple…"

The waitress froze, realizing her mistake. "Oh, I'm so sorry. I just assumed…"

"It's fine."
