Charlotte quickly handed her a glass of water. "I was just asking. Why are you so spooked?"
Lilith gulped down the water. Once she'd recovered, she asked cautiously, "Did Carstairs say something to you?"
Charlotte paused. "Why would you ask that?"
*Judd’s words did make me think, but why would Lilith immediately suspect him?*
"Uh, because he asked me the same thing today."
"When?"
Lilith’s eyes darted around. "I was out shopping at the mall, and I just happened to run into him. He cornered me and asked that question, but how would I know? Everyone says my cousin was killed in the explosion. My aunt cried until she passed out."
Charlotte pursed her lips but didn't question her story.
Lilith let out a quiet sigh of relief, then asked, "So, Charlotte… do you hope my cousin is still alive?"
Charlotte was taken aback. She turned to look out the window. "We're divorced. Whether he's alive or dead is none of my business."
"But from the sound of it, you seem to care a lot."
"You're hearing things." Charlotte placed a piece of food in her bowl. "Eat."
Lilith stuck her tongue out playfully and said no more.
At some point, Lilith ordered two bottles of whiskey, and before they knew it, they were drinking. By nine o'clock, they stumbled out of the restaurant arm in arm, thoroughly drunk.
"Charlotte~" Lilith let out a little hiccup, leaning so close her words were a warm breath in her ear. "Who do you think is better, my cousin or Carstairs?"
Charlotte hadn't been this drunk in a long time. Her head was spinning, and her feet felt light, as if she were walking on clouds. "Of course—Professor Carstairs is better!"
"What?" Lilith stopped in her tracks, half of her drunken haze evaporating. "You haven't actually fallen for Carstairs, have you?"
*What about my cousin, then?*
Charlotte stood unsteadily at the bottom of a set of stairs, looking up at her with a laugh. "Professor Carstairs is better than Evander, but what can I do? This thing…" She pointed to her heart. "It’s just too stubborn."
"I want to let go. I want to stop loving him! But then he comes back to provoke me, and he…" Charlotte's voice broke, a raw sob catching in her throat. "I'm just a glutton for punishment."
She was laughing and crying at the same time when her foot slipped on the step.
Just as Lilith reached out to grab her, a tall figure swooped in and caught her.
