Charlotte prepared a local anesthetic, and when she turned back, Judd had already shrugged off one side of his shirt. She couldn’t help but notice the lean, well-defined muscles of his arm—not overly bulky, but toned. Other than Evander, he was the only other man she’d seen who was both handsome and in such good shape.
Judd kept his eyes averted from his arm, his face looking a little pale. She remembered then that he was squeamish about blood.
Shaking off her thoughts, she moved closer. “Are you okay?”
His eyes met hers. “As long as you’re here, I’m fine.”
Charlotte looked down, applying the anesthetic to the wound. “Your face is white as a sheet. Don’t try to be tough. If you feel unwell, tell me immediately.”
“Should I lie down, then?”
Surprised by his cooperation, she took a moment to respond. “…Yes, that would be best.”
Judd lay down on the examination cot and closed his eyes, perhaps to make her feel more comfortable. After applying the anesthetic, she carefully stitched the wound, needing five sutures to close it. She dropped the bloodied cotton swabs into a biohazard bin. “All done. Keep it dry for the next few days.”
Judd sat up slowly, watching her as she tidied the countertop. “Do you think the attacker is connected to Neely?”
She paused, her brow furrowing. “I can’t think of anyone else. Do you think he recognized me?”
“Whether he did or not, you’re staying at my place for a few days.”
“I couldn’t possibly…” she stammered.
He gave her a weary smile. “I have a guest room. And I’m not the kind of man who would cross a line.”
Charlotte looked down, considering his offer. Her new house had good security, but getting to and from it was another matter. If Neely had recognized her, he wouldn’t stop until she was dead. She knew he had seen her face all those years ago. And Judd was right; he was a gentleman. Staying with him for a night or two until the police had a lead might be the safest option.
She bit her lip. “Okay, then.”
Judd handed her a key. “I won’t give you the key code. Just use this.”
