Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 415

Charlotte’s expression darkened. The Carstairs were a family of old money—one of the most influential in the country—and of course, anyone Judd married would have to be their equal. She was well aware of that.

But the way Vickie had just spoken to her? That was another matter entirely. It left a bitter taste in her mouth.

She was just about to retort when a new voice sounded from the hallway. “Vickie, I don’t think you speak for my brother, do you?”

Vickie froze, her composure faltering as she stepped aside awkwardly. “M-Miss…”

Miss?

Charlotte turned toward the doorway and saw a young woman, probably in her early twenties, glide into the room. She wore her hair long and straight, styled like a porcelain doll’s, with skin as fair as ivory. Over a warm, vintage nightgown, she’d thrown on a cozy knit cardigan. The girl’s eyes, wide and delicate, carried a striking resemblance to Judd’s—those same beautiful, fan-shaped eyes.

Charlotte realized, with a start, that she hadn’t known Judd had a younger sister.

Yolanda Carstairs met Charlotte’s gaze with a gentle smile before turning her attention to Vickie. “She’s my brother’s guest, isn’t she? You do realize if he heard you say that, you’d be in trouble.”

Vickie stammered, “I—it was Mrs. Carstairs’ instruction—”

“Even if it was Mother’s idea, I’m pretty sure you weren’t quoting her word for word, were you?”

Vickie’s face went pale.

“Mother might not agree, but she’d never ask you to say something like that in front of our guests. You owe everything you have to her, and being able to work here is a privilege—your job is to handle your own responsibilities, not to make decisions for the Carstairs family.”

Yolanda’s tone stayed gentle, but the authority in her words was unmistakable.

Vickie was about to slink away in embarrassment when Yolanda called after her, “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

Vickie stopped short. Though clearly reluctant, she finally managed to squeeze out a quick apology before leaving the room.

Once she was gone, Charlotte turned to Yolanda. “Thank you, Miss Carstairs, for stepping in.”
