Charlotte studied him, searching her memory for any trace of familiarity, but came up empty. “Have we met before?”

He smirked, tapping her forehead with a curled finger. “Whenever you met Evander, you met me too. Think about it.” With that, Judd turned and walked away.

Charlotte stood frozen, watching him leave, bewildered.

What did he mean by that?

She’d met Evander, and apparently him too?

So why couldn’t she remember…

Meanwhile, Norene sat by the window in a French restaurant, waiting. Her patience was wearing thin by the time her arranged fiancé finally arrived, strolling in as if he had all the time in the world.

She looked up at the man with slicked-back hair. He was handsome enough, especially with those deep-set eyes that gave him a sharp, almost predatory air.

Definitely not her type.

“Mr. Selwyn, is it? If you didn’t want to come, you shouldn’t have bothered.” Norene’s tone was blunt, her patience gone. “This engagement was set up by our parents anyway. If it falls apart, that’s fine by me.”

Finnick Vinterberg took his time sitting down, barely glancing at her. “Apologies for keeping Miss Lennox waiting. That was my oversight. Please accept this as an apology.” He slid an expensive-looking jewelry box across the table.

Norene frowned. “Mr. Selwyn, what’s this supposed to mean—?”

“My name is Finnick Vinterberg,” he corrected, leaning back in his chair. “Selwyn’s just the name I use abroad.”

Norene took a sip of her juice, unfazed. “Alright then, Mr. Vinterberg. I suppose you’re being forced into this engagement too, so let’s skip the gifts.”

“Not forced, exactly. Makes no difference to me whom I marry.”

His indifference made Norene roll her eyes internally.

Of course, to a man, it’s all the same.

Clearly, he had no intention of turning down the engagement.

Norene crossed her arms, refusing to back down. “I’m in love with someone else. I don’t like you. If we go through with this, it’s just a marriage on paper. You should be sure you’re okay with that.”

Finnick’s lips curled in a cold, thin smile. “That’s exactly what I want.”

“Let’s hope so.” Norene drained her glass, tossed her parting words over her shoulder, and left with her purse in hand.

Finnick absently traced the strap of his watch, whatever faint smile he had fading as she walked away.

Norene headed toward the elevator, just as a woman stepped out, brushing past her.
