Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 358

A few days later, Sean made a public announcement: he would be hosting a welcome party for his daughter at The Capital.

The party was set for tomorrow night, and word was, the guest list had no restrictions—anyone who wanted could attend.

When Genevieve heard the news, she spent the afternoon rifling through a dozen evening gowns at home, yet not a single one seemed right.

Ilse walked in and saw the mountain of dresses strewn across the bed. Shaking her head, she said, “It’s just a welcome party for the Rayburn heiress—no need to outshine the guest of honor. You wouldn’t want to steal Miss Rayburn’s thunder and make her upset.”

Genevieve rolled her eyes. “So what? That country bumpkin won’t care anyway.” After spending some time with Loretta these past days, she’d come to a conclusion: not only was the girl hopelessly naïve, she seemed to have left her brain somewhere else.

“Maybe she doesn’t care, but the Rayburn family certainly does,” Ilse sighed. “You should show them a little respect. As for Miss Rayburn, once you marry into their family, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do as you please.”

For a moment, Genevieve had to admit her mother had a point. She settled on a dress that was, at the very least, presentable.

Ilse paired it with some tasteful jewelry. “My daughter Genevieve is the most beautiful debutante in the city. I’m sure you’ll dazzle everyone tomorrow night.”

Genevieve admired her reflection in the mirror and lifted her chin, pride gleaming in her eyes. “Obviously.”

Meanwhile—

Wesley led Charlotte into the walk-in closet at the villa. Dozens of dresses, carefully arranged by the staff, awaited her selection.

She stared at the collection in disbelief. “Isn’t this a bit much, Wes?”

He stepped closer, arching an eyebrow. “How could there ever be too many dresses for my little sister?”

Charlotte couldn’t help but laugh. She sifted through the gowns, one by one, until her gaze landed on a blush-pink and sage-green dress with a modern yet timeless design.

The fresh pink, paired with vintage green, reminded her of a spring garden party—elegant and full of life.

The subtle V-neck and strapless cut flattered her collarbones, striking the perfect balance between grace and allure. Delicate embroidery traced the neckline and hem, every stitch a testament to masterful craftsmanship.

She ran her fingers along the fabric, unable to hide her admiration. “This is gorgeous.”

Noticing the hesitant look on the maid’s face, Wesley asked, “Is something wrong?”

Loretta blinked in surprise. “Me? Really?”

Charlotte gave a soft laugh. “If you see a dress you like, pick one out. You’ll be at the party tomorrow night too, won’t you?”

It was impossible not to be tempted by all those beautiful gowns, but Loretta hesitated—Wesley’s presence made her nervous.

Sensing her reluctance, Charlotte turned to Wesley, taking his hand. “What do you think, big brother?”

Wesley looked at Loretta, then smiled. “Sure. Whatever you say.”

Loretta did her best to contain her excitement. “Thank you, Lottie. Thank you… Mr. Rayburn!”

After Charlotte and Wesley left the room, Julian followed, frowning with concern. “Miss, Loretta’s tried to set you up before—why would you be so generous to her now? And Mr. Rayburn didn’t even put her on the guest list. If you let her come, how will you explain it?”

Wesley’s gaze lingered on Charlotte’s face. “I’d like to know that, too.” But he trusted his sister enough to know she had her reasons.

Charlotte finally stopped in the hallway, glancing back. “If Loretta shows up, the people behind her will finally make their move. I doubt she’d miss that opportunity.”
