Gentry glanced at Charlotte, who was just as stunned. “Which Mr. Howard are we talking about?”
Candida lifted her chin with pride. “Who else? The Mr. Howard from The Capital!”
“Really?” Charlotte frowned. “Funny, I didn’t know he had some mysterious guardian angel.”
“That’s not surprising at all,” Candida sniffed, clearly enjoying the attention. “My daughter actually saved Mr. Howard’s life when they were kids. Our families almost arranged for them to marry, you know. If we’d agreed, my girl would be Mrs. Howard now!”
Everyone nearby exchanged skeptical glances. The story sounded a bit far-fetched…
Gentry couldn’t help but laugh, folding her arms as she leaned in toward Charlotte. “Your husband—what is he, the reincarnation of a bee or something? Always buzzing around women?”
Charlotte didn’t respond to the joke. She turned instead to Candida and said, “No matter which Mr. Howard you mean, you’re in our hospital, so you’ll need to follow our rules. If you refuse to cooperate, that’s your right—but you’ll have to sign a liability waiver. If your husband is moved to a regular room and something goes wrong after surgery because he can’t be treated in time, our hospital isn’t responsible. We’ll discharge him if you wish.”
A flash of surprise crossed the head nurse’s face.
She’s really standing her ground!
Candida’s expression soured immediately. “Excuse me? Why should I have to sign anything? Saving lives is your job, not mine!”
“We want to save lives, but we need the family’s cooperation. Have you been cooperating? If not, why do you expect us to take all the responsibility? Or do you just not care what happens to your husband? Should I go ahead and call the funeral home for you?”
“How dare you say that! I’ll file a complaint against you, believe me!”
Charlotte shrugged. “It’s simple. You’ve got two choices: either stay and comply, or I’ll call the funeral home right now to send someone over. No treatment, straight to cremation—you’ll save a fortune.”
The nurses standing nearby thought Dr. Sterling had finally lost it, but honestly—it was about time someone said it!
Dealing with uncooperative, disruptive family members like this? They’d all been dying to let loose for ages.
“You… you…” Candida was so furious her hands were shaking. She glared at Charlotte. “Don’t think I can’t just call Mr. Howard here with one phone call!”
Charlotte calmly took out her cell phone. “Let me do it for you.”
She dialed Evander Howard’s number.
Just as the situation was spiraling out of control, Natalie and Evander appeared outside the ICU.
Candida glanced through the observation window and her face changed instantly, eyes flickering with guilt.
Gentry nodded toward the window. “Well, there’s Mr. Howard himself. Aren’t you going to call out to him?”
A couple of nurses had to stifle their laughter.
“I… umm…”
All of Candida’s bravado evaporated.
Charlotte walked out of the ICU, pulled down her mask, and looked Evander straight in the eyes. “Mr. Howard, you really do have connections everywhere, don’t you? Now you’ve got another ‘lifesaver’ showing up.”
Evander’s brows knit together, but before he could respond, Candida hurried out.
“Mr. Howard!” she called, wringing her hands and putting on her most obsequious smile. “I never dreamed Dr. Sterling actually knew you! Oh, this is all such a misunderstanding. Dr. Sterling saved my husband’s life—I can’t thank her enough!”
