Her sudden embrace caught Evander completely off guard. For a moment, he didn’t push her away. At that instant, Tricia finally noticed there was someone else in the hospital room.
Charlotte stood there, expressionless, watching the scene unfold. She offered a faint, detached smile. “Looks like I should give you two the room.”
Before Tricia could say a word, Evander pulled her out of his arms and walked toward Charlotte. “Go home. I’ll be there soon.”
Charlotte didn’t reply. She simply turned and walked out.
Tricia bit her lip, slipping in front of Evander to block his path, desperate to catch his eye. “Evander, I really don’t want to be transferred out of the hospital… Could you please talk to your grandmother for me?”
She reached for his hand, but as soon as she touched him, Evander abruptly shook her off.
Tricia froze, stunned.
She looked up into his cold, piercing eyes, and her body trembled. “Evander?”
“When did it start between you and Jonathan?” His gaze was sharp, full of restraint—and disappointment.
A chill ran down Tricia’s spine. Panic took over. “Evander, what are you talking about? There’s nothing between me and Mr. Pembroke, I—”
“The surveillance at The Blossom Hotel,” he cut her off.
Instantly, all the color drained from her face. She had no words.
Leaning against the drinks cabinet, Evander lit a cigarette and stared at her, his tone even and detached. “I only found out after I had Natalie hack into the hotel’s security footage. Turns out you and Jonathan have met up plenty of times. You always booked the same room.”
Tears streamed down Tricia’s face. She stumbled, legs buckling, and collapsed at his feet.
Sobbing, she clutched at his pant leg. “Evander, it’s not what you think! He forced me!”
“He thought I was your man and wanted revenge—he’s been forcing me to be with him. He said if I didn’t agree, he’d go after Hans, even if Hans is part of the Howard family!”
Even knowing he and Tricia could never be again, he still tried to make it up to her, giving her and her son the best life he could manage.
Almost as good as Charlotte’s…
Tricia was innocent, but was Charlotte any less so?
The first time he found out Tricia had played tricks at the hospital to embarrass Charlotte, he told himself that Charlotte was sensible and generous—she’d understand. He’d make it up to her in the end.
He kept telling himself that, over and over, until the hole he’d dug was too deep to fill.
Tricia, dazed and desperate, crawled to his feet. “Evander… I only wanted to scare her, I swear. I never meant to actually hurt her! I regret it. Evander, I never wanted to put her life in danger!”
“And what about Hiram and her parents?”
