Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 186

Evander rubbed the bridge of his nose, a clear sign of irritation etched across his face.

There was a time when, if she felt wronged, she’d just cry—and back then, his heart would soften. He’d even feel sorry for her. But now, a woman who bursts into tears at every little thing only wore on his nerves.

Noticing that Evander had no intention of comforting her, Tricia’s sobs gradually faded away.

Linette arrived, ushering in the two nannies involved. Both women hung their heads, shoulders hunched in guilt. They hadn’t watched the child properly, and now this—there was no doubt they’d lose their jobs.

Evander’s gaze swept over them. “Why was he by the pool? Where were you at the time?”

One nanny trembled, glancing up nervously. “He’s been spending a lot of time alone in the yard these days. He wouldn’t let us follow, so we thought he’d come back on his own. We had no idea he’d go near the pool.”

“That’s right,” the other chimed in. “Besides, his mother came to visit today. We didn’t expect anything to happen.”

Tricia’s expression shifted; she was afraid the blame would fall on her. Quickly, she interjected, “Evander, I could tell Hans hasn’t been happy these past few days. I remember Genevieve telling me that Charlotte met with Hans alone.”

“I don’t know what Charlotte might’ve said to him—I mean, I trust she wouldn’t do anything, but Hans’s strange behavior really worries me.”

“What could she possibly have said?” Evander turned to look at her.

Tricia faltered, her tone turning cautious. “She’s always hated me. I doubt she’d ever accept Hans, either.”

Linette let out a short laugh. “Miss Winthrop, that’s a bit unfair. If Mrs. Charlotte really wanted to be cruel to Hans, with the way Lady Marian dotes on her, Hans would’ve been sent away long ago. Don’t you think?”

“But… that’s just what Genevieve told me. She said she saw it with her own eyes. I didn’t want to believe it myself.” Tricia put on a face of troubled innocence.

Before Evander could reply, Linette instructed a servant to fetch Genevieve.

It wasn’t long before Genevieve entered, following the maid. She approached Evander, then glanced at Tricia, her expression flickering with unease. “You wanted to see me?”

He asked again, “Did you really see Charlotte bullying Hans that day?”

Linette nodded.

Genevieve stood there, stunned for a few seconds before it registered. “Hans—something happened to him?”

“Yes, Hans fell in the water. If I hadn’t arrived in time, who knows what might’ve happened…” Tricia covered her lips, feigning a wave of grief and dread.

Genevieve stared at her, the echo of whispered words ringing in her mind.

All this gentle, understanding, compassionate sweetness—behind it lay something cold and terrible. And she, Genevieve, had fallen for it for ten whole years.

After Tricia left, Evander and Genevieve made their way to the living room.

Genevieve lingered behind, hesitated, then stepped around to face him. “Evander!”
