Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 124

After a moment, Charlotte snapped out of her daze. Her voice was hoarse. “I’m out of practice—it’s been too long since I last cooked.”

“That’s not it.”

His reply was quick, almost abrupt. “It’s not that you’ve forgotten how. You just don’t want to anymore.”

Charlotte stared at him, bewildered. In six years together, she’d never seen him like this—so hollow, so defeated.

At least, never in front of her.

She couldn’t tell what state the alcohol had left him in tonight, but he definitely wasn’t drunk to the point of losing his senses.

If anything, he seemed more clear-headed than ever.

She clenched her hands and looked away. “Fine. I’ll make you some hangover soup. But you have to promise me you’ll stay out of Hiram’s business from now on.”

Evander met her gaze. “That’s your only condition?”

“I want your word—and I want you to keep it.”

When she took out her phone to record, he rested his elbow on the counter, a lazy, almost wistful smile flickering in his eyes. “Alright.”

Charlotte headed for the kitchen.

She’d made hangover soup so many times before that she didn’t even have to think about where the ingredients were kept.

Evander watched her silhouette in the kitchen, lost in thought.

His phone screen lit up with a message from Tricia. He glanced at it, ignored it, and switched off his phone.

Charlotte finished the soup, brought it to the table, and untied her apron. “I’ll sleep in the guest room tonight. You can have the master bedroom.”

“Wait.”

She paused, turning back to look at him.

Evander’s voice softened. “We’re going to visit the old house tomorrow. Get some rest.”

She pressed her lips together. “Alright.”

He said nothing more, and she quietly retreated to her room.

“You’d better.” Jacques answered a call from his secretary, then asked a servant to fetch his leather jacket. He stood up. “Mother, I have to go. I won’t be home for dinner tonight.”

Rosemary, turning her prayer beads, nodded silently.

Linette followed Jacques out to see him off.

“Charlotte.” Grandma beckoned her over.

Charlotte stood and offered her arm to help the elderly woman up. “Let me walk you back to your room.”

She could tell Grandma wanted to speak privately. Charlotte smiled and agreed, “Of course.”

Sunlight streamed through the hallway’s floor-to-ceiling windows, reflecting off the polished tiles.

“Lottie, you’re a good girl. It’s just a shame that Evander doesn’t realize what he has. You’ve been treated unfairly.”

Charlotte walked by her side. “I’m grateful for your care all these years, Grandma. Whatever I’ve endured is nothing by comparison.”

“You’ve really made up your mind about the divorce? There’s no going back for you?”

Charlotte shook her head. “No, there’s no going back.”
