Chapter 51
Kaia's POV
My head was much better when I woke up, the event that led to me having a panic attack was fresh in my memory. Although I wasn't sure how I got here.
“You made us worried, Luna. Don't do that again?" Allie asked, her voice trembling and her face was swollen like she'd been crying and I felt a pang of guilt.
“I'm sorry."
“There's nothing to be sorry about, you could've said something…I mean…” Dani started, taking a deep breath. "We're glad you're okay.” She finished.
Allie nodded, and both of them engulfed me in a hug, murmuring comforting words to my hearing. I offered them a small smile and told them it wasn't their fault…it really wasn't their fault.
Just when I thought the moon goddess was being generous and giving me the happy ending I so much deserve, she strikes again. Just that this time, I wasn't the only victim.
“Did you guys bring me here?" I asked after a while.
They shook their heads, “Kieran did. He left a few minutes before you woke up." Dani replied.
“We were out for a long time." Lylah said.
“Where's he now?"
“He's trying to sort things here and there, but he should be here soon.” Allie said, giving a vague answer. My brows furrowed, "What's going on?”
They exchanged a nervous glance, their eyes avoided meeting mine. “Nothing." Dani replied, her tone coming out a bit higher than she'd sound normally.
Allie nodded in agreement, her smile coming out fake. “I'll tell him you're awake." She said instead, running out of the room.
Dani moves around in her seat, suddenly finding the things in the room fascinating. Making it obvious she knew something I didn't and I hated being in the dark especially about something that concerns me.
When she didn't say anything for another five minutes, I laid down, already feeling exhausted.
“Did he make Laura the Luna?" I thought, my heart clenched at the thought of that happening. "or was he really stripped of his position as Alpha?”
These questions swam around in my head with no one providing answers. Lylah too hasn't said anything to me since I woke up. I wondered what was going through her head.
I fell asleep thinking and by the time I opened my eyes, Kieran was sitting at the side of my bed. He looked like he hadn't had a wink of sleep in weeks. Even his smile was different.
“Maybe I was cursed. Maybe I didn't deserve a happy ending."
"Hi…” he started, "do you feel better now?” He asked. Concern evident in his eyes.
"Yes, thank you.”
"I've spoken to the doctor, he thinks you're ready to leave, but I want you to rest well.” He told me and I nodded. A slight frown appeared on his face.
"Dani and Allie would come back to watch you for a while.”
"Is everything okay? How did your meeting go…?”
They kept quiet as they checked my vitals. I resisted the urge to grab one of them and force answers out of her.
"The Alpha is going to be so heartbroken, he spent all his life preparing for this position. And now he's at the verge of losing it all because he has a mate.”
I couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt as they spoke. They left once they were done and I sat upright. Tears pricked at the corner of my eyes.
“Why couldn't he just tell me?" I thought, “Perhaps he thought I wouldn't be able to handle it."
"Why do you always assume the worst thing in every situation?” Lylah asked, finally breaking her silence. "We are already in the hospital, do you think he would risk putting you through another panic attack?” She sounded weak.
That might be true, but it doesn't seem to be that. I was probably not thinking straight.
Was I being selfish for keeping him to myself when everything he had been working for? My presence had already caused a rift between himself and his parents.
“Will things go back to normal if I wasn't here?" The thought of it broke my heart. The thoughts of him being happy with someone else didn't sit right with me.
He didn't hesitate to show me how much he loves me and he never failed to go the extra mile for me and though I didn't tell him I love him…I did. How could I not? He made me feel on top of the world, showed me what being loved felt like…being loved for I was.
Before I knew what I was doing, I was changing into one of the clothes Allie brought for me. I also took some of them in the bag and left the room.
“What are you doing, Kaia?" Lylah asked, her voice sounding panicked.
“Showing him how much I love him."
…Or probably just making the worst mistake of my life.
