Claimed By The Lycan King (Kaia) novel Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Kieran's POV

My brow furrowed in confusion as I went over the file my Beta gave me and the more I went over it, the less it made sense.

“I had the same reaction." Caleb said. “Something wasn't adding up, so I kept digging." He explained.

“How come I didn't smell anything out of place?"

“My best guess is that he had a witch mask his scent to smell like a human." Ryder said and Caleb agreed. “I haven't found anything yet, but I probably will if I keep searching."

“Leave no stone unturned, get me everything there is to know about this man, what he wants and why he's targeting Kaia…everything” I commanded. I could still see the fear in her eyes when he wouldn't let go of her.

Caleb nodded, already moving towards the door. “On it, Alpha."

It turns out that the man who was bothering Kaia at the mall wasn't just some random human–he was a rogue. And that changes everything.

As Caleb left, Ryder spoke up. “Do you think he knew who Kaia was?”

I shook my head, "I doubt it. I'm not sure he recognizes me either.”

“Is that a good thing?” Ryder asked and I shook my head again.

"He would be able to tell she’s a werewolf before approaching her. And although I masked my scent, I let it slip when I saw the way he was holding her.”

“Do you think he approached her because he found her beautiful? And not because he had an ulterior motive? Ryder asked, after thinking for a while.

I sighed deeply, “whatever his reason was, I would get to the bottom of it, make sure Kaia is safe. She is mine and nobody is going to take that away.”

Ryder's face waa laced with conviction, "Of course, Alpha. Kaia is yours and soon, everyone will know that.”

Another sigh escaped my lips, he was right, sooner or later, everyone would know she's mine. The event of this morning will spread like wildfire among every member of the pack, it was just a matter of time.

But I wanted to make sure she was at least ready before officially announcing her as my Luna.

“I need to discuss security details with the warriors, I'll let you know how that goes." Ryder said.

Once he left, I slumped against my chair, massaging my temples to ease the tension that was gathering.

Things were moving fast…maybe too fast. I was still trying to relish in the fact that I found my mate and although it was slow, she was opening up to me and now, I have to deal with the possibility that she might be in danger.

King's voice cut through my thoughts, “We're going to protect her." He assured me and he was damn right, nothing was going to happen to her on my watch.

“Don't mention it to Lylah, she's starting to fit in, I don't want her to get worried unnecessarily.

“Of course."

As I focused on the documents, my mind began to wander. I wondered what Kaia was doing at that moment, and whether she was thinking of me. Just as I was starting to get lost in thought, I sensed a familiar presence in my mind.

“Hello, big brother." My little sister, Allie’s voice, rang at the back of my head, her tone playful but curious.

Unlike other werewolves who could only mind-link each other in the same pack, us Lycans were different. Distance wasn't a barrier when we needed to talk to each other.

“Yes, you heard right." I told her before she went any further.

“I don't know what you're talking about, I just wanted to know how you're doing."

I smiled at her poor attempt to cover her curiosity, “so it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I found my mate?"

There was silence for a few seconds, “you're right, why didn't you tell me?" She asked. Even without seeing her, I knew she was pouting.

“It was nice. I like spending time with the children. But I don't think Bailey is going to loosen up to me anytime soon. She's pretty upset and I think I made it worse when I tried to talk to her." She explained, a hint of amusement in her voice, adding to my curiosity.

“Why? What happened?"

“I told her you were mine and that…” I zoned out on the rest of what she was saying.

"She recognizes us as hers.” I said, resisting the urge to scream that at the top of my voice.

"Dani said she'll come around with time." She finished.

"She will, and you're right, I am yours.” I didn't need to see her face before I knew she was blushing. But know how irresistible she looked when she blushes, I guided her chin, turning her head to meet my gaze and I was right…fucking irresistible!

Before I could stop myself, I leaned in and trailed small kisses along the curve of her neck, feeling her shiver beneath my lips. My hand drifted up to cradle the back of her head, holding her in place as I deepened the kiss.

Just as I was losing myself in the sensation of her skin beneath my lips, the door creaked open. We both froze, our hearts racing in unison.

"Alpha? Ryder's voice cut through the tension, his eyes scanning the room before settling on us.

I pulled back, my eyes never leaving Kaia's flushed face. "What is it, Ryder?" I growled, trying to keep my frustration in check.

Ryder's expression was neutral, but I could sense a hint of amusement in his voice. "The patrol team has reported some unusual activity near the pack borders."

I nodded, my mind already shifting into gear. "I'll be right there."

As Ryder turned to leave, I caught Kaia's eye, my gaze holding a promise. "I'll be back soon." I told her, placing one last kiss on her forehead.

He couldn't have waited for five more minutes!
