Helanie:
As soon as we opened the door, the Zharns rushed toward us. Among them stood a woman. She was old, with long gray hair. Her eyes were so gray I could barely see anything in them. She wore a gray outfit that flowed in the wind. A sound came from her mouth. It seemed like a song, but more like a cursed melody, like someone crying and wailing.
We lunged forward, attacking the Zharns at the mansion’s door. I clawed one of them, then grabbed another by the mouth, splitting it open and tearing the whole Zharn in two before tossing it away. The others fought with just as much heat and strength.
Kaye and Penn had shifted. With Kaye being a massive, powerful wolf, he tossed Zharns aside as fast as they came.
While we fought, I noticed the gray woman was gone. I used my mermaid senses and picked up a sound from the second floor. I focused and realized there were screams up there. Someone must have come in through the back door and invaded the second floor.
"Where are you going?" Norman yelled after me.
"There’s something happening upstairs, where the babies are!" I shouted back, rushing up the stairs.
I burst into the room and found the gray woman standing there, screaming at the top of her lungs, her wailing song shaking the walls. My babies were crying. The others tried to stop her, but they had to cover their ears and drop to their knees.
I didn’t wait. As the sound started to burn through my ears and brain, I attacked. She wasn’t just dealing with a werewolf. I was a mermaid too.
I slammed her to the ground and punched her, knocking the wind out of her. Then I turned to check on everyone. Jenny and Sage had rushed to comfort the babies, and I would have loved to do the same, but someone else needed me more.
"Mother!" I screamed, rushing to her side. She was on the floor with a dagger in her stomach. More daggers were scattered around. The gray woman had attacked many when she came upstairs, but the others were werewolves. They either survived or didn’t take as much damage.
But my mother was neither werewolf nor mermaid anymore. She was bleeding, and bleeding fast.
"Mother," I cried as I slid my arms under her and carried her.
"No, take care of the babies," my mother stuttered, coughing.
"They have others to take care of them. We need to get you to the hospital," I said in a broken voice, shaking as I held her. I felt miserable. After all she had been through, she deserved a better ending than this.
As I reached the door, Norman was already there, eyes wide at my mother’s side. Behind him stood his father, who had probably come upstairs to check on his beloved Ursula.
"Ursula!" he cried, taking her from me. "I’ll take her to the hospital. You take care of the mansion and everyone else," Lord McQuoid ordered as he rushed past and carried my mother away.
I wanted to follow, but someone had to pay for what she had done. I turned and glared at the gray woman.
I could tell the gray woman had been sent by Lady Darcy.
"Let’s fucking pick her up and take her for investigation. We’re gonna investigate the shit out of her," Norman hissed as he realized the woman had walked into the place she was not supposed to be.
"We’ve been looking for her everywhere so we could get our hands on her and investigate the curses and everything," he went on. "But now that she’s here, we’re gonna do it."
I grabbed her by the hair and dragged her mercilessly. The monsters had suddenly left.
