Karina moved through the bustling market, weaving between the crowd and the colorful stalls. At the fish counter, she carefully selected a fresh, plump sea bass.
Next, she headed to the produce section, picking out a bunch of fresh spinach, a few smooth potatoes, and some plump mushrooms. She also grabbed essential seasonings like green onions, ginger, and garlic.
Back at her apartment, she quickly donned an apron and began washing and organizing the ingredients, placing them neatly on the counter.
Just as Karina was about to prepare the sea bass, Wilfred walked into the kitchen.
“Need any help?” he asked.
Karina turned, surprised. “Dr. Wilfred, you cook?”
He chuckled lightly. “I know a thing or two. I can’t let you handle all of this on your own.”
Warmth filled Karina’s heart. “That’s wonderful, Dr. Wilfred. Could you help me chop the vegetables?”
Wilfred washed his hands, picked up a knife, and began slicing the potatoes with practiced precision. The potato strips were remarkably even, prompting Karina to exclaim, “Dr. Wilfred, your knife skills are amazing!”
Wilfred smiled modestly. “I picked it up while studying and working abroad. Cooking was a necessity back then.”
The two fell into a seamless rhythm.
Karina worked on the sea bass, scoring its skin and marinating it with a bit of cooking wine and slices of ginger to remove any fishy smell.
Meanwhile, Wilfred washed and chopped the greens into bite-sized pieces and sliced the mushrooms. He soaked the thinly sliced potatoes in water to keep them from browning.
Once everything was ready, Karina lit the stove and poured oil into a pan. When the oil began to shimmer, she carefully placed the marinated sea bass into the pan. The fish sizzled as it hit the hot oil, filling the kitchen with a delicious aroma.
She quickly set the plate down.
“What happened? Did you hurt yourself?” Wilfred walked over, his gaze flicking to the plate and then narrowing in concern.
Karina instinctively hid her hand behind her back. “It’s nothing, just a small burn. I’ll rinse it under cold water, and it’ll be fine.”
Wilfred, however, wasn’t about to let it slide. He firmly insisted, “Let me see your hand.”
Karina hesitated but eventually, under his unwavering gaze, she reluctantly held out her hand.
Her pale skin made even the smallest injuries stand out, and the redness on her fingers from the burn was impossible to hide.
Wilfred’s expression darkened immediately, his lips pressing into a thin line. A chill seemed to emanate from him as his displeasure became evident.
