Benedict finally felt a little less irritated, but he’d barely taken a few steps before someone called out to him.
“Benedict…”
He turned around and saw Janice coming in from outside the office building.
A flicker of surprise crossed his face, quickly replaced by a hint of warning in his expression. “What are you doing here?”
After Giselle’s dramatic scene at the reunion last night, Benedict really didn’t want to risk running into Janice for a while—he was worried Cynthia would get suspicious. So seeing Janice here now instantly put him on edge.
Janice noticed the wariness in his eyes, and it stung; she felt a sharp pang in her chest. She lowered her voice and explained, “Miss Chalfont wanted to see you. She has some questions about Cynthia, so I brought her here.”
Only then did Benedict realize there was another woman standing beside Janice.
Viola’s gaze swept over him with open scrutiny. “You’re Cynthia’s boyfriend here in Cloudcrest?”
He was handsome enough, but compared to Dominic, he didn’t even come close. No wonder Cynthia latched onto Dominic the moment she had the chance; anyone would, standing next to a man like this. Dominic was, by any measure, in a league of his own.
Benedict felt the disdain in Viola’s expression and couldn’t help but frown. “And you are?”
With an air of haughty composure, Viola introduced herself. “Viola Chalfont, from the Chalfont family in the Capital.”
“Miss Chalfont, this way, please.”
He stepped ahead and gestured toward the elevators with a courteous sweep of his arm. Viola walked past him without a word, and Janice quietly followed at the rear.
When they reached the elevators, Benedict paused and noticed Janice still trailing behind. He raised a hand as if to gently block her path. “Janice, you should head back for now.”
Janice opened her mouth as if to protest, but before she could say anything, Viola spoke up, her tone as lofty as ever. “You can go. The rest, I’ll discuss with Mr. Shepard. Too many people knowing isn’t ideal.”
This time, she was determined to make sure Cynthia would never stand at Dominic’s side again. Even if she couldn’t have Dominic herself—or even if Miranda beat her to him—she’d be damned if she let Cynthia get off so easily.
