“Do you have any idea my cousin’s about to get engaged to Nick? That makes you the other woman.”
“Nick’s only interested in you because you’re something new. How long do you think that’s going to last? With the Tremaines in the state they’re in, what makes you think you could ever marry into the Holloway family? Keep dreaming.”
Cynthia’s lips curved into a bright, almost cheerful smile as she leaned in a little closer to Viola, dropping her voice.
“You know Nick still spoils me, yet you have the nerve to come lecture me? Aren’t you worried I’ll whisper a few things in Nick’s ear tonight, let him know how you tried to pick a fight with me?”
Viola’s face twisted, her eyes burning with hate as she ground out two words between clenched teeth.
“Bitch.”
Cynthia’s smile only widened. She glanced away from Viola, her tone flat and dismissive.
“We both know who the real bitch is here.”
“Honestly, the way you rush over to scold me—aren’t you just desperate for a chance to play the part yourself?”
“Too bad for you, Nick seems to prefer me. He won’t even look your way, will he?”
Viola paled, Cynthia’s words hitting their mark.
“That’s not true!”
“You—!”
As Viola’s composure began to crack, Cynthia lifted a finger to her lips and gave a soft “shhh.”
Dominic’s eyes darkened as he watched Cynthia change direction.
Miranda noticed the shift in Dominic’s mood and tightened her grip on her wine glass.
Earlier, after Cynthia had gone to the restroom, Dominic had followed her out. He’d returned a short while later, looking unusually upbeat. Miranda had worried that Viola might have said something to Cynthia in the restroom—something that might upset Dominic, or worse, draw Miranda into unwanted drama.
When Dominic returned, Miranda had approached him, testing the waters with a few casual questions. He’d only smiled, offering no real answers—just that rare, unmistakably good mood.
Now, as Cynthia walked straight toward Juliet without so much as glancing at Dominic, his expression clouded over.
Miranda understood exactly what that meant. What she couldn’t understand was why Cynthia, of all people, had such an effect on Dominic’s emotions. She’d been by his side for years and yet, the only title she’d ever earned was “friend.”
