Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 163

Secretary Sabina offered a polite, welcoming gesture, then opened Dominic's office door for Cynthia.

Cynthia murmured a quiet thank you and stepped inside.

Dominic sat at his desk, deeply focused on a stack of documents. His black shirt sleeves were rolled up just enough to reveal strong forearms, and his expression was all business as he studied the pages.

Cynthia approached his desk and spoke softly.

"Mr. Holloway, I'm here."

Dominic responded with a noncommittal "Hmm," his expression unchanged, eyes never leaving the paperwork.

Cynthia pressed her lips together before offering an explanation.

"I wasn't late. Earlier, since you were meeting with Miss Kingsley, I thought it best not to interrupt. I waited in the main office until you were free."

At that, Dominic finally looked up, a faint crease appearing between his brows. There was a flicker of discontent in his dark eyes as he regarded her.

Cynthia hesitated, replaying her words in her mind. She hadn't said anything out of line. In fact, she'd been as respectful as possible. After all, they were boss and subordinate now. She had to keep her tone professional.

"Is something wrong, Mr. Holloway?" she asked quietly, unsettled by his silence.

"It's nothing," Dominic replied coolly, returning his gaze to the documents.

Seeing that he didn't offer any further instructions—or even mention which department she should report to—Cynthia grew uncertain. She finally had to ask.

"Mr. Holloway, may I ask which department I'll be joining?"

He'd probably assign her to the planning team, she thought. That would give her the chance to work with top talent and learn even more.

Cynthia firmly believed that being around exceptional people would only help her become better, too. Once she fulfilled her agreement with Dominic and returned to Tremaine Holdings, she could put everything she learned to good use.

Dominic glanced up, noticing the hope on her face. His tone was flat as he replied,

"You'll be working here."

Cynthia waited for the project manager to sit before taking her own seat.

She recognized him from a business news segment—Quincy, manager of the Holloway Enterprises project division. If Dominic intended for her to join that team, Quincy would be her direct supervisor. Best to show the proper respect.

Dominic glanced at Cynthia, noting her composed, deferential demeanor, then turned to Quincy.

"She's the author of the proposal I showed you yesterday—Cynthia."

Quincy immediately stood up and offered his hand.

"Miss Tremaine, your proposal was exceptionally well done."

Dominic's introduction had been brief, just a name:

"Quincy."

As Quincy stood, Cynthia rose as well and shook his hand, her smile humble and warm.
