Monica Ashley grew even more resentful.
It wasn't a secret that this Ruby had been infatuated with Cassian. She didn't know what kind of dumb luck Ruby had to actually marry him! She herself had followed him for so many years and had never even touched his hand!
Ruby watched their exchange without any reaction. Instead, she turned to the old woman with a faint, calm smile. “Of course, my gift can’t compare to Miss Ashley’s extravagance. I just hope you won’t mind.”
The old woman didn’t seem to care much. After all, Monica Ashley and Ruby came from different worlds. Monica was from a prominent family in The Capital, and the resources she had were beyond what most people could imagine.
“Don’t say that. As long as it comes from the heart, the sentiment itself is priceless,” the old woman said with a kind smile, gently patting Ruby’s hand.
Ruby’s lips curved slightly. Not wanting to refuse again, she opened the gift box in her hand.
She did so without any dramatic, slow reveal.
Monica Ashley cast a disdainful glance in her direction, but her eyes froze when she saw the object inside the box.
It was a brooch in the shape of a lifelike swallow. Though crafted from gold thread and gemstones, the rigid materials had been masterfully shaped into a form that captured the grace and spirit of a living creature.
The swallow's body was made of emerald, its eyes dotted with rubies, and its wings were outlined with incredibly fine white diamonds that traced the flow of the feathers. Just by looking at the paper-thin slices of emerald on the wings, one could tell the immense skill of the craftsman.
The piece was not just a testament to the rarity of its materials, but also to the preciousness of the technique behind it.
Even the old woman, a seasoned collector who had seen countless treasures, widened her eyes, a look of rare fascination on her face.
“Ruby, where did you get this brooch?”
The old woman observed it from a distance, her fingertips hovering half an inch from the piece, not daring to touch it yet clearly captivated.
“It can’t compare to the effort Miss Ashley spent picking out gifts at the mall. This was custom-made for me by a friend,” Ruby said with a humble smile, her words and posture modest, which earned her several appreciative nods from the old woman.
“I love it,” the old woman said, looking directly into Ruby’s eyes with sincere gravity.
“I’m honored that you like it, Madam.” Ruby picked up the brooch. “Would you like to try it on?”
Beaming with joy, the old woman didn’t refuse. She pinned it on and immediately found a nearby mirror to admire her reflection.
