A violent shudder ran through Gennifer’s body as the figure closed in on her. Her mind finally snapped into gear, and she spun on her heel, ready to bolt.
But Morgan was faster. He lunged forward, crossing the distance in a single stride and clamped a vice-like hand down on her shoulder.
“Ah!”
Gennifer cried out in pain, her face contorting as the grip dug in. His hand was like a steel talon, as if he meant to claw through her shirt and break her bones.
“Morgan, what are you doing? There are security cameras here!”
Terror spiked through her, but she forced herself to bite down hard on her lip, trying to keep her body from shaking.
Morgan’s mouth curled into a cold, predatory smile. “But there’s no press here.”
His eyes were shards of ice, so chilling she could barely stand to look at him.
Gennifer’s fear seeped from her fingertips to her legs; now even her knees trembled. A moment ago, she might have clung to a shred of hope, but now the truth was glaringly clear.
Morgan had come for retribution.
Before she could even process what was happening, his iron grip shot out and seized her chin.
“Gennifer, getting a little full of yourself, aren’t you? Setting me up—did you think you could get away with that?”
His gaze was cold and merciless as he stared down at her twisted, pain-ridden face.
He remembered the chaos from earlier that day—the moment when a swarm of reporters had burst into the hotel suite he’d shared with Ruby. At the time, he hadn’t even considered Gennifer as the mastermind behind it all.
How could she have dared to pull something like that?
He’d also overheard her conversations outside the Apex Legal Partners office. Even if he didn’t know why Gennifer had suddenly taken such an interest in Ruby, or why she was playing both sides, she’d dragged Morgan into her mess as a convenient scapegoat.
Did she ever ask for his permission?
His grip tightened, making Gennifer fear he’d snap her jaw in two.
“Morgan—”
She felt his hand sliding from her chin to her throat, a wave of icy dread crawling up her spine.
What is he going to do?
Her eyes went wide with terror, her lips quivering. She could barely force out a single, trembling sentence. “Mr. Blackwood… you… I have my reasons—”
But his hand wrapped firmly around her neck, and her voice died. Silent tears slid down her cheeks.
“Reasons?” Morgan sneered. “Don’t kid yourself. This was all about trapping Ruby. And just because the tide seems to be turning in the Grayson family’s favor, you think you can get away with anything?”
Gennifer shook her head in panic, desperate to deny it, but Morgan had no patience left. He grabbed her by the collar and hauled her into the car like a sack of laundry.
