It was just a threat—nothing she hadn’t heard before. But meeting Ruby’s cold, unflinching eyes, Gennifer couldn’t help herself. A violent shudder ripped through her, making her teeth chatter.
Cassian felt a headache coming on. Beside him, Bennett acted quickly, stepping forward to steady Gennifer before she could collapse.
“Take her to Veyne Private Medical Center for a check-up.”
He barely spared Gennifer a glance, his eyes skimming over her bruised, battered state before turning away. He focused on Ruby, grabbing hold of her arms to keep her from lashing out again.
Gennifer, already reeling from the trauma, felt a fresh wave of humiliation. Cassian’s indifference was like a slap to the face.
She stared at him, desperate for something—anything—but he only had eyes for Ruby. The faint crease between his brows was all the attention she got.
“Cassian!”
She used the last of her strength to drag herself to his feet, looking up at him with pleading, tear-filled eyes. “My sister barged into my home and beat me without a second thought. You have to stand up for me!”
Only then did Cassian look down at her. “Let Bennett take you to the hospital,” he said, his voice low and gentle enough to make Gennifer think, for a fleeting moment, that he truly cared. But his grip on Ruby’s arm never loosened, and that was all she needed to convince herself otherwise.
Gennifer tried to stand, but her knees nearly buckled beneath her. Bennett, catching on, quickly called for a stretcher to be sent over from NeoVista Medical Center.
When it arrived, Gennifer’s battered appearance startled even the seasoned paramedics. They hurried to lift her onto the stretcher with Frieda glaring at Cassian before trailing after, worry etched across her face. Elin followed close behind.
Bennett quietly closed the door behind them, leaving only Ruby and Cassian in the apartment.
“Come home with me.”
He repeated the command, but Ruby’s mocking smile said it all.
“Home? And where exactly is that for me and Mira? Besides, shouldn’t Mr. Veyne be more concerned about getting justice for Gennifer right now?”
