Wait. No. Hold on. Am I hallucinating? Because this can’t be real, right? This isn’t real. This is nothing but a sick joke. I must have hit my head harder than I thought.
Do you hear me? I’m serious. I’m blinking over and over again so hard my eyes sting, my tears are burning, and I keep thinking maybe if I close them long enough and open them again, she’ll be gone, she won’t be there, because it doesn’t make sense. None of this makes sense. I swear to you, if this is real, then I don’t know what the fuck is left to believe in.
And I’m rambling because I don’t know what else to do, because how do you process this? You can’t. I can’t. This has to be a trick. A hallucination. A nightmare designed to rip me apart.
Because it’s Tasha. And she isn’t supposed to be here. She isn’ t supposed to be standing with him. She isn’t supposed to be looking at me like that, with that twisted smirk
And then I laughed.
No, like, I really laughed. Not a cute little giggle, not a polite chuckle, not even the kind of laugh you let out when your teacher trips in class. No.
This was the full— on, chest —cracking, tears— running- down — my— face, somebody—better- lock— me— up kind of laugh.
The kind of laugh people write in horror books right before the girl completely loses her sanity. And yeah, that was me. On the floor, bloody, shaking, and laughing like a crazy person.
“Y’all are pulling a prank on me, right? RIGHT? What the fuck is this?” I was clutching my stomach, not because it was funny but because the laugh was ripping out of me like it had claws.
“Come on, admit it, this is some YouTube prank shit, right? ‘Let’s traumatize Lyra and see how long it takes before she cries herself into a straitjacket.’ Because honestly? Ten out of ten. You got me. Hilarious. Now can someone cut the cameras?”
And then I saw her. Tasha. And oh my Goddess, my laughter hit a pitch so high even dogs three miles away probably heard me because..
“Tasha! Why the actual fuck are you naked? Put on some fucking clothes!” I wheezed, still laughing like I had finally snapped. “No seriously, what are you doing?
“This isn’t summer camp, this isn’t sldnny—dipping in the lake, this isn’t ‘oops I forgot my towel.’ Why the hell are you naked, standing next to Darren like this is some Victoria’s Secret audition from hell?”
My brain would not shut up. It was screaming, it was talking, it was doing the absolute most, because what else do you do when your best friend pops out of the dark butt-naked with a smirk? You either cry or you laugh, and I had already cried, so now I was on the laugh train and it wasn’t stopping.
“Oh my Goddess, is this a ritual?!” I yelled, talking to you like you’re sitting right here beside me. “Because tell me why Darren looks like a demon with his cock out, and Tasha looks like she’s about to light candles and chant in Latin, and I’m the sacrifice bleeding on the floor.
“Do you see it? Do you see how insane this looks? Because if I didn’t know better, I’d swear I stumbled into a low—budget horror porno.”
I was laughing so hard I started sobbing all over again, because it wasn’t funny, it was never funny, but my brain didn’t know what else to do except make jokes.
“Shut up, bitch, watch this,” Tasha snapped, and before I could even gasp she grabbed Darren’s face and slammed her mouth onto his. Their tongues were crashing together, wet and loud, and I swear my whole stomach twisted because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
