I thought of their tiny little heartbeats and the thought hit me so hard it knocked the air right out of my lungs because what if I fell, what ifI landed wrong, what if something happened to them before they even had a chance to breathe?
I panicked and it made me stumble, just one wrong step because I wasn’t looking, because the ground was uneven, because the universe apparently hated me tonight.
My foot caught on a root buried under the dirt and my body pitched forward before I could even grab anything, before I could scream loud enough for Damon to hear me across the bond, before I could do anything but throw my hands out too late as my stomach slammed into the ground.
“Arghhhhh!”
My arms buckle when I tried to push myself up. My face was in the dirt, my hair sticking to my cheeks, my chest heaving like my lungs were trying to claw their way out.
“My belly!” I screamed it so loud it cracked in the middle because panic was eating me alive now.
“Fuck! My belly! My babies! ” My voice was climbing higher and higher because my brain was spiraling so fast I couldn’t even hold onto a single thought. “Damon! Damon, can you hear me? Babe, please, I fell, my stomach hurts, please answer me, I can’t—oh my God, please—”
“Serves you right, you bitch! ”
That was Darren’s voice, dark and rough and furious as his boots pounded closer through the dirt, every step shaking straight through my spine like thunder.
“I told you to run, didn’t I? I told you what was going to happen when I caught you, but no, you wanted to scratch me, you wanted to mouth off, you wanted to make me bleed. Look at you now, Lyra. On the ground, crying, finally shutting that pretty little mouth long enough to scream for someone who isn’t here.”
“I’m not shutting up!” I screamed right back even though my voice was cracking and wobbling like I was dangling over the edge of the world. “Damon! Damon, please, I’m scared! I fell, I landed on my belly, oh God, my babies—please somebody help me!”
Darren was standing over me now, his shadow swallowing me in the dirt, his chest heaving, his jaw tight like he was about to break apart from the inside out. “Get up,” he snapped, his voice like gravel. “Get the hell up before I drag you off the ground myself.”
“I can’t! ” I yelled, my hands shaking as I tried to push myself up and almost fell again because my head was spinning, my eyes were burning, my whole body was shaking so hard I thought my teeth were going to rattle out.
