Emmett's heart skipped a beat, but outwardly he remained perfectly composed. "Where did you hear that? Was it from the same person?"

He kept his tone carefully measured, but that initial flicker of surprise didn't escape Jeremy's watchful eyes.

Jeremy nodded, his face unreadable. "Yes. He mentioned the notebook first, and then said he knew the secret behind my novel."

To be honest, Jeremy was just as curious about what secret that notebook might hold. If there really was something in there he could use to control Mr. Emmett, maybe he could squeeze even more money out of him.

Emmett's voice dropped, low and steady. "None of that matters. What you need to remember, always, is that the novel is your own work, and any profits are yours. That's all that matters."

"But Mr. Emmett, what if he actually does know something—something important?"

Jeremy had always been obedient in front of Emmett, but this time anxiety crept into his words. Part of him wanted leverage over Emmett—something to bargain with for more cash—yet he also worried that notebook might ruin his chance to blackmail STAR into a fat settlement.

That apartment he'd been eyeing wasn't going to pay for itself; he needed that money for the down payment.

Watching Jeremy's nervous, fidgety expression, Emmett's patience wore thin. "Just remember what I told you. Even if this ends up in court, you won't have to spend a penny. I'll make sure you're compensated, too. So what are you still worrying about?"

Jeremy finally relaxed, the weight in his chest lifting at Emmett's promise. He nodded so vigorously it looked comical. "Yes, yes, of course! I'll remember. The novel is mine, it has nothing to do with you, or anyone else!"

Emmett sometimes found this clueless hanger-on unbearably irritating, but if Jeremy were actually clever, he'd never have gone along with Emmett's schemes in the first place.

It was a headache, no denying it. Still, as long as Jeremy's greed could be satisfied, there was nothing much to worry about.
