Lionel felt as if his whole body were buzzing and burning, every nerve ending alive with a strange mix of numbness and heat—like being tormented by a swarm of ants and a ball of fire all at once.
With great effort, he forced his eyes open. His mind was foggy, but not completely gone.
He thought he saw Juliette. She was dressed in a sharp business suit, her silhouette elegant as she stood slightly turned away, holding her phone up as if making a call.
Hadn’t he just tried to call her himself...?
Lionel’s throat felt parched and raw. He worried that this vision of her was nothing but a fever dream, so he couldn’t help but reach out, his large hand moving toward her—
“Hello? Yes, I need—” Juliette had barely begun speaking into the phone when, out of nowhere, her arm was seized by an unbearably hot grip. Even through her sleeve, she could feel the heat radiating from his palm.
Lionel’s hand caught her so suddenly that Juliette froze, her mind going blank, her words dying in her throat.
“Hello, this is Kingston City Emergency Dispatch. Do you require an ambulance?” came the calm voice from the other end. But Juliette wasn’t listening anymore.
Lionel pulled her toward him with such force that she lost her balance and tumbled into his burning-hot embrace. Her phone slipped from her fingers and landed on the carpet with a dull thud.
He tightened his arms around her, holding her trembling body close. A deep, guttural sigh escaped his lips—a sound of satisfaction.
Satisfaction?
No.
It wasn’t nearly enough.
He’d finally managed to hold onto this vision, this phantom that had haunted him for so long. How could he possibly be satisfied?
Every cell in his body screamed for more—much, much more.
Driven by instinct, Lionel rolled over, pulling Juliette beneath him. His hand traced the curve of her cheek, fingertips grazing her soft, delicate skin. His eyes, dark and feverish, devoured the face he’d seen in his dreams a thousand times.
