"Are you sure you came to the right guy for a drinking buddy?" Nathaniel eyed the man downing whiskey alone in his living room, a pale gray microfiber cloth in hand. "Wouldn't hitting a bar with York or Calvert be more your style?"
York had been Beasley's childhood friend. Calvert was the grandson of Beasley's great-aunt. Both of them knew their way around drinks far better than Nathaniel did, and neither would hesitate to join Beasley for a few rounds.
Beasley tipped back the last of his whiskey, then finally looked up. "York's busy settling in at the Sinclairs, getting up to speed. Won't be available for a while."
Nathaniel arched an eyebrow. "And Calvert?"
Without waiting for an answer, he turned away, resuming his meticulous cleaning of his beloved model—a titanium-alloy fighter jet nearly four feet tall.
"Not welcome here?" Beasley set his glass down and sprawled back against the couch, making it clear he had no intention of leaving.
Nathaniel shrugged, not looking up. "I just think you'll end up feeling even worse if you drink here. I'm not exactly the life of the party."
He'd never been much of a drinker himself. The last time he'd joined Beasley for a glass was just to celebrate Beasley's birthday.
Beasley gave a bitter, lopsided smile. Even Nathaniel saw he was drinking to drown his sorrows.
Was it really that obvious?
"It's comfortable here," Beasley admitted. "I can clear my head, maybe sort some things out."
Bars weren't his scene—not even the upscale, members-only lounges he sometimes got dragged to. There was always some idiot trying to impress him, always someone sending women to his table, convinced that booze and beautiful women could seal any deal.
But Beasley had never bought into that. He made sure nobody in his circle did either. The only time he'd ever let his guard down with a woman was that night Willow drugged him.
That one mistake had forced him to abandon his standards and marry her.
