But just as he opened his mouth, Isabel suddenly said, “Go get me a glass of water.”

It wasn’t just old Mr. Foster who was stunned; Oliver was completely frozen.

He didn’t react for a long moment.

Isabel looked down at him. “What, you don’t want to?”

“I do!” Oliver snapped out of his daze, his face lighting up. He hurried to the water dispenser, and just as Isabel used to do for him, he tested the temperature to make sure it wasn’t too hot before bringing it to her.

Isabel took it and had a sip. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I haven’t seen you in a few days, Mom, so I came to visit,” Oliver said.

Fearing he would make her angry, he spoke quickly, his words tumbling out. The main point was that he didn’t want her to be upset, that he wasn’t there to bother her, only to see her.

Isabel didn’t say much. “Go play over there. I need to talk to Grandpa Foster about something. I’ll take you out to eat in a little while.”

Oliver was dizzy with shock and happiness.

His mom had actually spoken to him, and now she wanted to eat with him.

He had no one to share his joy with.

In the end, he could only send Adrian a message.

“Unlock it,” Adrian said.
