“How can you not be on my side at a time like this!”
Mr. Blackwell said, “Can’t you see the situation? It’s obvious your youngest son doesn’t want a divorce. He’s trying to clear up the misunderstanding with Isabel and reconcile. You’re just determined to make things worse.”
“I’m making things worse?” Mrs. Blackwell’s voice was sharp, her eyes red with anger. “Charles Blackwell, you’re a coward. Without me propping you up, do you think you’d have so many accomplished children today, or that people would greet you with respect wherever you go? If I weren’t tough, this family would have fallen apart long ago, relying on you!”
Charles Blackwell had his pride. He’d always preferred gentle women, but a woman like that wouldn’t have had the resources to help him succeed.
Still, he had built a life with her over the years.
If there were no feelings at all, they wouldn’t have had three children.
But perhaps now that they had everything—the Blackwell family and the Blackwell Group were both well-managed—he found himself disliking Mrs. Blackwell’s personality more and more.
Especially recently. So much had happened, and her hostility toward Isabel had become even more unreasonable.
“Why are you yelling at me? I’ve always been neutral. Mom said before that we should be good to Isabel. I listened to you and wasn’t particularly good to her, but I wasn’t bad to her either. I just ignored her most of the time. You’re the one who needs to think this through. Since Adrian is trying to reconcile, what will you do if they actually get back together?”
Mrs. Blackwell laughed at the thought. “What will I do? What, you think she can walk all over me just because Adrian likes her now?”
For the past six years, on the fifteenth of every month, she had made Isabel go to the church and kneel in penance. Whether it was freezing cold or scorching hot, whether she was sick or on her period, Isabel always showed up on time.
She wasn’t even allowed to eat that day, and she never once resisted.
If she could control her before, she could certainly manage her if she remained married to her son.
The idea of a mother-in-law being overpowered by her daughter-in-law was a joke. People would laugh.
“Charles Blackwell, you’d better drop whatever little ideas you have. It doesn’t matter if you’re a coward or stay neutral in this family. I don’t even care if you’re not on my side. But if you dare to mess around on me outside this house, I will tear you to shreds.”
