Downstairs, Isabel answered a call from Amanda.
"We didn't get a chance to eat tonight. I'm bringing you guys some food, but it'll take me a while. The snow's coming down pretty hard."
Isabel said, "We can just grab a bite near the hospital. Don't come out, it's too dangerous."
Amanda replied, "I can't sit still at home anyway. I'm too worried about you. Besides, I'm already on my way. Leo said he misses you too."
What else could Isabel say? "Drive carefully."
"I will," Amanda promised. "Wait for me."
Isabel hung up and told the others. Still, she turned to Edmund. "Are you hungry? I can take you to get something to eat first."
Adults could wait, but a child couldn't.
Edmund shook his head.
But then Isabel spotted something and pulled him toward it.
In Westbridge, especially when it snowed, eating a roasted sweet potato was one of life's greatest pleasures.
She asked for the two largest ones.
After paying, she broke off a small piece for Edmund. "Careful, it's hot."
Edmund had eaten them before, at his great-grandfather's place.
He took it. "Thanks, Mommy."
"You're welcome, sweetie." Isabel led him back and shared the sweet potatoes with Evelyn and Miles.
She took a bite, and a warmth instantly spread through her body. She couldn't help but say to Evelyn, "If you have a daughter, how about we let my Edmund be your son-in-law?"
Evelyn nearly choked on her sweet potato. "Are you serious?"
Isabel laughed. "Of course not. A son this wonderful, I'd rather keep him for myself."
Evelyn pretended to be fierce. "Don't even dream about it, old woman. You're twenty years older than him."
Isabel was in a rare playful mood. "It's not that bad. Haven't you seen on the news? There are couples with thirty, even forty-year age gaps."
"Did that bastard Adrian drive you crazy? That's your own son you're talking about, the one who shares your last name."
