Ian's skepticism threw Makayla into deep thought.
"What kind of proof do you need?" Makayla asked.
To Makayla, the relationship she shared with Elijah required no evidence whatsoever.
Elijah was her brother, and that was that.
Ian challenged, "You say you're Elijah's sister,. Do you have an ID? Can you show it to me?"
Makayla wasn't sure if she had an ID card, but she could ask her brother about it.
"I'll dig up some proof!" She assured Ian.
She trusted Marta's words wholeheartedly. Because Marta had told her that Elijah's mother was also her mother, and Elijah confirmed it too. She and Elijah shared the same mother, and it was only natural they were siblings!
"If you can't come up with proof, I won't acknowledge anything." Ian said coldly, walking away with his plate.
Makayla watched his retreating figure, feeling a mix of anxiety and indignation. If only Elijah were here now. She could ask him for proof.
Ian returned to Mike's side.
Mike asked, "What did Makayla say to you? Didn't Elijah say he wouldn't come? Makayla's here, so it looks like Elijah might show up at the wedding today."
Ian frowned, "Nothing really."
Mike noticed Makayla kept glancing their way, and felt a pang of sympathy, "We really shouldn't be so ruthless to someone who's mentally challenged."
Ian said, "She's not as naive as she used to be."
Mike said, "Yeah, I've never doubted your mother's medical skills."
Ian looked quite proud of his mom.
"I have gifts for you." She reached into her bag and pulled out a shiny trinket, "Rita, this is for you. Do you know what it is? It's a rainbow maker! Hang it in your window, and when the sun shines, you'll have a rainbow in your room!”
Rita couldn't resist the gift. She was thrilled. "Makayla, thank you! My brother warned me about hanging out with you, but I really love your gift!"
Makayla looked at Ian, puzzled, "Why don't you want Rita to play with me? I'm your aunt."
Ian said, "Proof!"
Makayla's eyes sparkled, "I'll show you the proof."
Ian said, "Even if you show me, I won't acknowledge it! I don't want Elijah to be my dad. I don't recognize him!"
Makayla felt a bit heartbroken and hurt, "You can refuse to acknowledge him as your dad, but you can't deny me. I haven't done anything bad to you!"
Ian was speechless. He was suddenly at a loss for words. Makayla's way of thinking was unique, but he couldn't find anything wrong with it.
