Sophia swallowed the piece of rib in her mouth. All of a sudden, she found herself a little sick of the taste.
“Do you know why?” Megan hurriedly wiped the corner of her eyes, rubbing the oil on her hands all over her face. “Because he was starting a business, and I could give him money.
“In fact, when the first man slept with me, he was actually right there by the side, and he knew what was happening. But he pretended to be drunk and asleep because that man could give him a ton of funding.
“Does my boyfriend not love me? He does. I can tell. But he loves his career even more. Sophia, humans are all complicated creatures. You shouldn’t hope for anything pure.”
Sophia offered her a tissue and went back to chewing on her ribs silently.
If a love was impure, she would rather not have it at all.
The two of them went back to drinking the rib soup without a word.
After they were done, Megan tidied up the hospital room efficiently and stuffed the gift box into Sophia’s arms. “Here, this is for you.”
“No, thanks. I won’t take it.” Sophia did not do anything to warrant a present, so she had no intention of accepting something for nothing.
“Don’t be so quick to reject it.” Megan forcefully pressed the gift into her arms before leaning in closer to Sophia and saying, “Do you remember the plan to seduce Mr. Harris? This is a tool for that mission.”
When Sophia heard the word ‘seduce’, her pupils dilated. There was a hint of melancholy flashing through her eyes.
In the past, she would do facials and hair treatments every day, making herself as beautiful as possible, but she still could not get Charles to give her another look.
Now, she was covered with scars all over her body, and she even had a scar at the edge of her brow that was as large as a fingernail. Her hands and feet were covered with callouses. Why would Charles ever fall for her now?
“Thank you, but I think I’ll pass on that plan.” She was no longer naive enough to hope for a miracle, dreaming that one day Charles would suddenly fall in love with her.
“Are you afraid you’ll fail?” Megan hazarded a careful guess as to her intentions. “Are you saying that you’ll be okay with… staying at Dream Club for the rest of your life?”
Sophia gripped the sheets tightly. Okay? How could she possibly be okay with it? Even so, this was her reality now. She had no choice.
“If you’re not okay with it, then give it a try.” When Megan saw how upset Sophia became at the thought, she continued, “The worst-case scenario is that you fail to seduce him and he punishes you in a fit of anger. But well… Don’t be mad at me for saying this, but I don’t think you can end up any worse than the way you are now.”
Sophia pursed her lips tightly, an unreadable light in her eyes.
Even if she did not want to admit it, Megan was right. Charles had broken her leg and thrown her into jail for a couple of years, and now he was keeping her here at Dream Club just to humiliate her… Even if she angered him further, how much worse could it get?
The changes in her expression were not obvious, but Megan had been working at the club for many years, so she was an expert at reading people. She could tell that Sophia’s resolve was beginning to waver.
Megan pressed the gift into Sophia’s arms again. “Every man, no matter how capable, is still a man, and that means he has his inherent flaws as a man. You told me that Mr. Harris likes Miss Jones, but he never turned you down, did he? That proves he’s not all that devoted to her.”
This time, Sophia did not refuse the gift. She accepted it with trembling fingers.
She did not want to live such a humiliating life under Charles and Leah’s shadows anymore. She wanted to leave, she wanted it so badly she even dreamed about it!
“There you go. Give it a gamble. At least that way you have a chance of succeeding. Even if you fail, the worst that could happen is that you continue this life.” Megan gestured at the box Sophia was holding with her chin. “I’ve asked many people, and I’ve used them before myself. Those three pieces of sexy lingerie are quite effective.”
Sophia’s lashes, as thick as butterfly wings, shuddered a few times. Her lips and her face were equally white, and there was a thin layer of cold sweat beading on her nose already.
A man like Charles Harris probably had hundreds if not thousands of ways of tormenting her further. Even so, she already survived the way he broke her leg. At the most, she would just have to suffer that kind of pain a few more times…
Megan gave a low cough, throwing Sophia looks as though her eyes were having a seizure, but it was of no use. The latter was not looking at her at all.
All Megan could do was droop her head even lower, hoping to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.
“It’s alright. Leave if you want to, Will.” There was nothing but sincerity on Leah’s pretty face. “I’m sure Sophia was only temporarily misguided when she hit me two years ago. She’s not a bad person at heart.”
No matter what she said, though, William could not put his heart at ease, so he insisted on staying here.
“Do you want something with me, Mr. Jones, Ms. Jones?” Sophia pursed her lips, her eyes gleaming with her hatred of the siblings. “If there isn’t anything, please leave. Think of it as an act of charity.”
William frowned even deeper. “Leah came all the way here to apologize to you. Do you have to be so harsh?”
“Apologize?” Sophia tugged at the corners of her lips, but the smile did not reach her eyes at all.
“If you’re here to apologize, then I accept your apology. You can leave now.”
When she heard that, Leah struggled to get out of her wheelchair. William hurriedly put his arms around her to prevent her from falling.
“Sophia, it was all my fault for pouring the hot water on you and hurting you so badly that day.” Leah bowed a full ninety degrees to show her sincerity as she said, “I’m so sorry.”
Sophia looked at her emotionlessly. It seemed that she was certain to lose to her.
“Yesterday, Sterling came to Dream Club to find me. He hit me, scolded me, and splashed hot water at me. There’s nothing more for me to say because it was all my fault.”
Leah straightened up and said softly, “But I’m really sorry that I accidentally hurt you. I hope you can forgive me.”
