Once Sophia got inside the cab, the driver asked in a different dialect, “Where ya headed to, young miss?”
“... Do you know Dream Club?” Sophia was startled, and she still did not know which police station her brother was in.
“I do, I know ’bout it!” The driver’s eyes glowed. “Who doesn’t know where that is? The rich will usually go there and play, and ordinary people like me can’t afford to go there. Are ya heading there?”
Sophia licked her dry lips. “No, I’m going to the police station nearest there.”
Charles had been in Dream Club before and her brother should have been taken away from there. Under normal circumstances, her brother should be at the police station closest to Dream Club.
The driver started talking a lot, but she had something else in her mind. Hence, she did not listen to a word of it.
She made a few more calls to her brother and sister-in-law in the car, but neither of them answered. She frowned and sent a text message to each of them.
‘Tell me which police station you’re in, or else I’ll go and look one by one.’
Sterling called back immediately. “Soph, I’m really not at the police station. You…”
“Continue your lies.” Sophia interrupted him instantly.
Sterling responded, “When I first met you a while ago, I thought that you’ve become obedient and more well-behaved. Why are you still so stubborn? I’m telling you, men like girls like Le…” He immediately changed his words. “Your sis-in-law is such a gentlewoman. A tigress like you is going to end up alone.”
“Stop with the nonsense and tell me where you are.” Sophia frowned. Her big brother was making so many excuses just to prevent her from going to the station. Perhaps the matter was not going well.
Sterling sensed that she was already furious. He did not dare to add anything more. “It’s the police station closest to the club. Your leg is injured, so don’t walk. If you really want to come over, ask the nurse to get you a wheel…”
Sophia had already hung up the phone. She was staring straight ahead, but her eyes were empty and lackluster.
Charles and Leah would not let her brother out so easily.
20 minutes later, the cab stopped in front of the police station.
Sophia paid for the ride and got out of the car with much difficulty. The driver offered to help her get into the police station, but she refused.
“My little sister’s coming soon!!!” Sterling’s voice could be heard through the door. “Just tell me how much money you need for the matter to be solved! I won’t bargain with you!”
“Mr. White, you’ll still need to negotiate this matter with Mr. Harris and Ms. Jones. If they won’t let you go, the only thing we can do is proceed.”
Sterling roared louder, “Don’t you use that on me! All of you are just…”
“Ster.” Sophia walked in and stood beside Sterling.
Sterling quietly glared at the flushed policeman and said somewhat pleadingly, “It’s not a big deal. It’s the same as before. I’ll just give some money so I can leave just as before. I didn’t touch that b*stard couple!”
The policemen merely looked down and pretended as if they did not hear the words ‘b*stard couple’.
“Stop making things worse!” Nicole tugged at his clothes, her face flushed with anxiety.
Sterling glanced at his already furious wife and younger sister. He pouted his lips and tsked once before he stopped talking.
“Police officer, you said that it’ll be fine as long as Mr. Harris and Ms. Jones are willing to let it go, right?” Sophia looked at the policeman and asked softly.
Sterling was burning with rage upon watching her fawning and humbling attitude. His eyebrows were knitted into a small lump. As soon as he was about to interrupt, Nicole held him back. “Sterling, if you really do feel sorry for Soph, stop what you’re doing. Don’t cause any more trouble.”
Sterling pried her hand off, the veins on his forehead popping out. However, he still stayed still and did not say a word.
Leah was silent for a while before saying apologetically, “I’m sorry, Sophia. Charles is unwilling to let this go. You should have also seen the lawyer that Charles hired at the police station, right?”
As soon as she was done talking, Clara Robertson, who had taken the initiative to help Sophia before, walked in. “Hey, aren’t you that cleaner at Dream Club? Why are you at the police station? Have you committed another crime?”
A handsome and sunshine-like lawyer wearing an impeccable suit and leather shoes stood behind her, holding a briefcase and portfolio.
He pushed the gold-rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose and looked Sophia up and down a few times.
“Wait a moment.” Sophia pointed to the phone.
Clara blinked, put her fingers in front of her lips, and made a gesture of pulling the zipper.
Then, Sophia continued. “My brother has already owned up to his mistake. He keeps saying he’ll go there and apologize personally. The main victim here is you, so as long as you say the words, the police station will release him. Think of it as the Whites owing you a favor. Can you please let my brother go?”
Sterling rolled his eyes and pulled his tie irritably.
“If Uncle James knows that he owes me a favor, I’m afraid he’ll get angry.” Leah sighed. “Sophia, you’re making things hard on me.”
Sophia’s fingers gripped the corners of her clothes. Her fingertips turned white due to the force. “Can you, please? Just think of it as… I’m begging you.”
Sterling suddenly raised his head and looked at her with scarlet eyes. He rushed forward to grab the phone but was stopped by Nicole again.
