“Okay.”
After getting her approval, Sterling nodded and left the room.
“Wait a minute, Ster, there’s still something I don’t quite understand,” Sophia said, “When did Charles find out that I was still alive? Also, hasn’t he been at home all the time for the past few weeks? He never stepped foot in his office too so how did he find out about Mr. Zellner and the whole money laundering matter?”
She did not get the chance to ask these questions earlier because of how urgent the situation was.
Now that the emergency was resolved, she was a little curious.
Sterling began speaking.
“From what he told me, he already figured it out when you went to see him the second time, but because that was when he found out that Mr. Logan had a hidden camera and audio recording device, he was worried about exposing you, and so he refused to see you at that time.
“He was at home the entire time and stopped going to the company because Mr. Logan was always by his side and there was never a good time for him to do anything. He would always call me whenever Mr. Logan was not around and have me contact Commander Zoe. He also made the necessary arrangements with his people at the office so it wasn’t that hard for us to retrieve the accounting records after.
“In the beginning, he wasn’t putting on a show when he was drowning himself in alcohol, but he just continued the act after he discovered that you were still alive.”
So that was what happened.
Sophia furrowed her brows. “Mr. Logan was the one…”
She started softly but could not bring herself to finish the sentence.
Mr. Logan had been by Charles’ side for so many years now, Charles must be upset to be betrayed by him.
Sterling waved his hand at her and said, “You misunderstood him, Mr. Logan did not betray your man. Mr. Zellner managed to bribe his wife to pin all that on Mr. Logan.”
Now that Sophia finally understood the entire story, the anxiousness in her chest finally dissipated.
-
Charles’ uncle brought him out of the hospital and they got into a military jeep.
‘Sophia’ bustled over at the sight of them and got into the front passenger seat.
“Where are we going?” Charles asked as soon as they got into the car.
Johaan ordered the driver to start the car and rubbed his aching temples. “You and Alex disobeyed orders and killed five of Mr. Zellner’s men so we lost all of our witnesses. Aside from that, you personally sent the accounting records out so they’re destroyed now, which means we might get inves…”
“How do you know that the accounting records are destroyed?” Charles interrupted him mid-sentence.
‘Sophia’, who Charles finally learned was called Alex, replied, “The three people who came with me are all your uncle’s men. As soon as we left Mr. Zellner’s place, they heard him make a phone call to give orders to get rid of the accounting records.”
He heaved a heavy sigh and continued, “Sigh, that means all our evidence of Mr. Zellner and his money laundering gig is down the drain now! To think we initially thought that those records could prove his illegal arms dealings, as well as his bribes all this while! Everything is ruined now!”
Charles’ expression did not change at all as Alex spoke.
In his head, Alex rolled his eyes at Charles. Sure enough, he was not one of them and he did not care about the accounting records! This man had caused them to lose the records and he did not even show any sign of remorse!
Something clicked in Johaan’s head. Knowing this nephew of his, there might be a turning point in this matter. “Charles?”
“The records aren’t destroyed, they’re still with me.” He had already expected Mr. Zeller to order his subordinates to destroy the accounting records, and so he had made the arrangements in advance to ensure that the original accounting records would not get destroyed.
“Unless, you have definite evidence to prove that you have nothing to do with this incident. To be honest, if your grandfather was still alive, all charges could have been brought to him and him alone. However, he’s already dead so that’s impossible.”
“Besides, even if he was still alive, he would never allow that, knowing how selfish he was.”
-
The arrest operation lasted an entire week. In the end, Mr. Zellner was finally charged with illegal arms dealing, homicide, abuse of power, and bribery, while the trial was announced to be held at a later date.
The other corrupted officials who worked together with him were punished based on their crimes as well.
Something worth mentioning was Sylvia Yates, the retired award-winning actress, survived a rumored abduction where her lover, Jax Cabot, was killed. However, she came out alive traumatized, and mentally unstable.
Mr. Zellner pushed part of the blame on her, and in addition to the corresponding evidence, she was unable to refute.
Besides, she did in fact order Leah to murder someone, and although the murder did succeed, she still had to pay a price, and so she would be spending the rest of her days in prison.
As soon as news broke out, the public was extremely shocked at Mr. Zellner’s crimes. It was simply unimaginable.
Sylvia, on the other hand, had plenty of negative remarks and criticism. She was a suspect of tax evasion, attempted murder, and everything else Mr. Zellner could possibly push on her.
She was a public figure who seemed devoted to charity work, and she was an idol to many people because of her acting career. However, everyone found out that the amount of tax she paid every year was barely one percent of the millions of dollars she donated every year.
Sylvia became a public enemy overnight. Now that she had been arrested, the angry civilians even went to protest at the prison where she was held, whereas some even tried to cause trouble at her various estates. Everything that was made of glass at her properties was basically broken at this point.
