“Who are you? Why do you have Soph’s jade pendant?” Nicole paled as she stared at them cautiously.
The nurse quickly explained what Victor had told her. “Mrs. White, please don’t get us wrong, we’re not bad people.”
However, this one sentence did not satisfy Nicole at all.
At the thought of Sophia being taken away at Master Harris’ funeral, she became even more vigilant. If these two people standing across her did anything suspicious, she would call for help right away!
“Mrs. White, we’re really not here to cause trouble.” The nurse did not dare to even flinch, worried that Nicole might get the wrong idea. “Ms. Griffin went to visit the site as soon as she heard about Ms. White’s accident and she found this jade pendant on the spot.”
Nicole was still not buying her story.
There were so many people, as well as police officers, who searched the crash site for any possible trails or clues but found nothing. Yet, Ms. Griffin was able to find Soph’s jade pendant?
“How was Ms. Griffin able to visit the crash site when she is so badly hurt herself?” Nicole asked.
Her reaction was exactly the same as what Dr. Hemingway had told the nurse.
The nurse gave an inward sigh. Well, it turned out that Dr. Hemingway had guessed correctly. “It’s quite a long story. When Ms. Griffin accepted Ms. White’s help with the charity donation, she had only injured her legs. She suffered the acid attack that ruined her at Ms. White’s accident scene.”
Nicole remained silent as she waited for the nurse to continue her explanation.
“Back then, the police left the scene after being unable to find anything, and that was when they still haven’t discovered that Leah Jones was the culprit. Ms. Griffin wanted to give a try herself, and so she headed over to the crime scene to have a look, thinking that she might get lucky.”
“Although she did not find any clues, she came across this jade pendant. She was just contemplating whether to hand it over to the police when someone suddenly darted out of nowhere and threatened her to hand over the jade pendant. When she refused to, the attacker splashed sulfuric acid on her,” the nurse continued.
Sophia had thought through this series of explanations.
She knew how alert Charles, her brother, and sister-in-law were, and how difficult it would be for a ‘stranger’ to approach them. However, seeing Charles’ current state, she could not just sit around and do nothing.
After serious consideration, she came up with her current made-up character: a woman who she had once helped in the past, Scarlett Griffin.
As long as they believed her reasoning, Scarlett would be someone Sophia had once helped, and hence was indebted to Sophia.
Moreover, she had gotten injured while trying to protect Sophia’s jade pendant. Although she was unsure how Charles would react, she was certain that Nicole and Sterling would feel guilty for her.
Then, it would not be as hard to approach them anymore.
However, despite how much the nurse had explained, Nicole was still doubtful. “The crash site was quite broad and empty, it wouldn’t be easy for someone to hide out of plain sight. Ms. Griffin, how is it possible that you didn’t notice someone was there? And… how could the attacker have known that you would be there and waited for you with sulfuric acid on hand?”
“This… I…” The nurse was getting anxious. “Mrs. White, if we had used other means to get this jade pendant, we wouldn’t have had the guts to come see you in person and return it to you!”
Dr. Hemingway had instructed her to say this if Mrs. White was still suspicious and she was unable to explain anymore.
Nicole was stunned when she heard this.
That was true.
However, she still felt that something was wrong with the two of them. “Thank you for returning this jade pendant to me.”
She did not mention anything about bringing them to see Charles.
Sophia shook her head. “Ms. White helped me with a big favor, I want to stay here a little longer.”
Charles, Sterling, and Nicole were bound to leave after the funeral, she wanted to wait until then to see if she could just see them close by, even if it was just for a second.
It had only been a few days since she had not seen them and she already felt so distanced. Especially seeing Charles in his current state, her heart… It felt as if it was breaking.
However, she had no choice but to fake her death. Not only would she become a target once again, but she would also become Charles, her brother, and her sister-in-law’s burden again.
Sophia kept quiet as she shook her head.
Mainly, the nurse thought that Ms. Griffin’s current situation was able to gain their sympathy.
“My throat hurts, I can’t talk too much.” Sophia simply gave an excuse. If she spoke, her sister-in-law would certainly recognize her voice, and things would get messy.
The nurse thought her reasoning made sense and said nothing more. She clearly adjusted the scarf over Sophia’s lap to prevent her from catching a cold.
Sophia stared straight at the funeral scene. Unfortunately, there were too many people and she was standing too far away so she could not see the people she wanted to see.
However, the last person she wanted to see suddenly appeared right before her.
