Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around! novel Chapter 448

“I didn’t know you loved Sophia so much…” Zachary took a bottle of whiskey as he sat beside Charles.

It had only been three days but Charles had lost a lot of weight. His eyes were bloodshot and his unshaven chin made him look nothing like the confident business whiz that he was.

Charles barely responded to Zachary. He merely continued drinking the bottle of whiskey in his hand.

Clara came along with Zachary and her eyes were red and swollen. “Big Iceberg, can you not be so depressed! That b*tch already got what she deserved but your grandmother…”

“Cough, don’t talk too much,” Zachary immediately interrupted her and gave her a warning look.

“I didn’t say anything wrong though, why won’t you let me speak!” Clara shoved him aside and stood in front of Charles. “There’s obviously someone else aside from that b*tch who killed Sophia, are you telling me that you don’t plan on finding out who that person is?”

Charles remained quiet as he continued chugging down whiskey. It was as if he had not heard her at all.

The living room was filled with empty bottles scattered all over the floor and the scent of alcohol in the air was repulsive.

“How can you still drink?”

Clara snatched the bottle of whiskey from him and threw it straight on the ground. Then, she turned to Charles and screamed at him angrily, “When Sophia was framed two years ago, she went through hell in prison for two whole years, and even after that, she had to suffer under the hands of you and Leah after she was released!”

“She was killed all of a sudden and you’re doing nothing?! If it weren’t for you, Sophia wouldn’t have had such a miserable life!”

In the past 20 years or so, she had never encountered anyone who had it worse than Sophia in her entire life!

Charles stared blankly at the empty bottles on the ground as his fingers trembled uncontrollably. A look of dejection and hopelessness cast over his handsome face.

Everyone knew that even without him, Sophia would be able to live her life…

“Stop talking,” Zachary lowered his tone and said to Clara as he yanked her back by the collar of her shirt.

“I didn’t say anything wrong! Why won’t you let me speak?” Clara had always made friends by trusting her instinct, and Sophia was one of her friends whom she truly liked. “Even Sterling who had doted over this sister of his for his entire life is able to pick himself together to go back to work, so why can’t Big Iceberg over here get his sh*t together so we can start hunting down the person behind Sophia’s murder?”

Ever since Sophia’s death, everyone was expecting Sterling, the brother who had just recently started to focus on work, would break down, whereas Charles would not be affected much.

However, it was the other way around:

Apart from the day when Sophia’s death was officially announced and Sterling was so upset that he got admitted to the hospital for alcohol poisoning, he had gone back to work at White Industries the very next day. In fact, he seemed much more hardworking than before too.

Charles, on the other hand, had been moping at home drinking all day after getting Leah sent to prison and giving orders to force the Jones family into bankruptcy, and had not stepped foot in the office ever since.

Clara did have a point and Zachary did not know how to refute this time, and so he turned to look at Charles, who merely picked up another bottle of whiskey and continued drinking just like before.

He and Charles had known each other for a very long time so he knew Charles quite well, but it was only because of how well he knew the man, he was even shocked at Charles’ behavior.

He had never seen Charles so disheartened.

“Stop drinking.” Zachary grabbed the bottle from him, feeling helpless and furious at the same time. “You’re not eating, you’re not sleeping, if you continue drinking like this, your life will be on the line!”

Charles looked up at him and stood up shakily as he tried to snatch the bottle back. “Give… me…”

“Charles, it’s fine if you don’t want to do anything else but the least you should do is eat and sleep.” Zachary put the bottle behind him. His free hand reached to adjust his glasses as he continued earnestly, “Think about it, if Sophia was still alive, she wouldn’t want to see you like this, would she?”

Oscar quickly said, “She can be quite impatient, please don’t mind her, Mr. Johnson. It’s just that we have something urgent to discuss with Charles and it’s a private matter, that’s all.”

In other words, they were implying that this was the Harris family’s private affair. If these two knew any better, they should leave right away.

Zachary knew better than to try to meddle in their family’s business, but seeing Charles’ current state, he was worried that Charles might get into trouble if he left right then.

Just as Zachary was still contemplating what to do, Charles got up on his feet shakily once again.

He swept his gaze across the crowd in front of him indifferently. “Are you here because of Harris Corporation?”

He could barely stand straight on the ground but somehow, his tone was eerily calm, unlike someone who was drunk.

Oscar went quiet as he sneaked a look at Zachary as if what he was about to say was not meant for outsiders.

However, Charles was unbothered. “Once the Jones family goes bankrupt, all my shares will be equally distributed between all of you,” he continued.

Now that Sophia and his child were gone, everything he had meant nothing to him.

Despite his calm tone, his words hit everyone in the room like a bomb.

Harris Corporation’s market value was significantly high, and the shares in his hands were worth so much that even the average millionaire would not be able to earn the amount of money in several lifetimes, let alone the average person!
