Seeing how threatening Sterling looked, the nurse was unsure whether to answer Sterling’s question and so she looked at Victor.
“Just tell him,” Victor simply said.
Then only did the nurse reply shakily, “They’re at the ward downstairs.”
“Take me there.” This time, Charles was the one who spoke. Before the nurse even replied, he had already left the room, making his way to the elevator.
His face was expressionless, unlike the furious look on Sterling’s face. Nonetheless, the nurse could not help but feel frightened. This time, she did not even dare to ask for Victor’s help and quickly scurried after Charles.
As soon as they left the room, Victor closed the door after them.
Victor knew he did not have many chances left. He took out his phone and pretended to look at a message, then exclaimed in surprise, “Mrs. White, Mr. White’s chief attending just texted me saying that there were signs of Mr. White’s finger moving. It might be that he’s going to wake up any time!”
“Really?”
This was the only good news she had received in the past couple of days, and Nicole’s eyes lit up with joy.
Victor replied, “I will never joke about such serious matters, Mrs. White. Please, I would like to congratulate you and your family.”
Nicole knew that she must hurry over if James was going to wake up, but… She cast a look at Sophia who was lying in bed and hesitated.
If she left the room now, Soph would be all alone…
“The living is much more important than the dead. Mrs. White, you should go and have a look. Don’t worry, I’ll accompany Ms. White while you’re away,” Victor said.
Although he was right, the thought of leaving Sophia alone with not one family member did not sit right with Nicole.
“I’ll give my husband a call and have him go over, I can stay here and accompany Soph.”
Nicole took her phone out as she spoke.
Victor knew he would seem suspicious if he pressed on, but if he did not, he might not get the chance to switch Sophia’s body out anymore.
“Wait a minute,” Victor called out to her.
Nicole was just about to press the call button. “What is it, Dr. Hemingway?”
“I don’t know why Mr. White got so aggravated when he heard Ms. Yates being mentioned but I know that Mr. Harris does not like Ms. Yates very much. Can I assume that Ms. Yates was involved in Ms. White’s death?” Victor asked tentatively.
Nicole kept quiet, her silence only confirming Victor’s suspicions.
“Mr. White is quite an impetuous man, I don’t think he’ll be able to forgive someone involved in Ms. White’s death so easily. If you call him right now, he might get annoyed at you.” Victor knew that his reasoning was quite weak, but he was desperate now and he could not think of anything better.
“It’s alright, he’s not an unreasonable person. Thank you for the reminder though, Dr. Hemingway.”
Seeing that Nicole insisted on calling Sterling, there was nothing Victor can do anymore. He lowered his head and frowned as he wracked his brain trying to think of another way.
However, it was as if God was on his side, a phone began ringing in the room right after Nicole dialed Sterling’s number —— Sterling had left his phone with Nicole.
Victor secretly let out a sigh of relief and said, “It would be a waste of time to go and get Mr. White yourself. Mrs. White, I think you should just go yourself, I can stay here with Ms. White.”
Nicole was still hesitating. Soph had died all alone, and if she left now, Soph would be left alone now. It just did not feel right.
Victor looked at her hesitantly. Then, made some calls to have someone send over a corpse.
Many people died from fire accidents every day in the world, and that included B City. Some people respected the dead body, but some people saw the dead body as just a price labeled corpse.
It did not take Victor long (or much money either) to buy himself a corpse that most resembled Sophia, and he had two helpers send them over. The corpse was placed on the hospital bed and he had them secretly move Sophia to the empty room beside them.
Worried that they would be seen, Victor had no choice but to ask Sophia to hide in a storage box.
Now that the anesthetic had worn off, every bone in her body hurt especially now that she had to curl up in this position.
Her elbows that came into contact with her lower ribs hurt especially more, as well as her back muscles as the wounds were tugged. Tears welled up in her eyes from the pain but she merely gritted her teeth and kept quiet.
Victor had always admired how strong she was, but right now, he would much rather hear her complain or perhaps let out cries of pain to feel better.
Victor only left the room when he made sure that Sophia was properly hidden. He was just worried that Nicole would suddenly come back and get suspicious when he was nowhere to be seen.
Well, the more you feared something, the more likely it would happen.
As soon as he opened the door where Sophia was now hidden, he saw Nicole standing outside the room from before, staring in his direction.
“I’m sorry, I had to attend to an urgent patient just now but I had only left a few minutes,” Victor said calmly.
He was a doctor working at this hospital so it was only normal for him to be called off to see other patients. Nicole could not possibly blame him for that.
However, something felt fishy.
