Once Victor was done, he suddenly realized something and quickly added. “Ms. White, please don’t misunderstand what I said just now. You’re not one of those irrelevant, random people.”
Sophia grunted a soft response.
“Dare I say that Soph seems very special to you, Dr. Hemingway,” Nicole said in a teasing tone.
Victor gently laughed and replied, “Of course. My aunt treasures her like she’s her very own daughter and told me multiple times to take good care of her, so yes, I admit that I treat her differently from others.”
“We don’t get many people like you who listen to the elderly anymore, Dr. Hemingway. My parents used to constantly remind me of who their friends’ children are and nagged me to make sure that we get along well,” Nicole said.
“But we just didn’t click at all, so I couldn’t mix well with them nor did I bother to keep an eye out for them.”
Dr. Hemingway adjusted a few of the needles. “Mrs. White, you’re not exactly wrong. To be honest, if Ms. White isn’t as lovely to me as she is, I probably wouldn’t even see her as a friend.”
He emphasized the word ‘friend’.
Nicole replied with a soft laugh and said nothing more.
Halfway through, Victor was called away. About an hour later, the nurse from earlier returned to the room to help remove the needles.
The nurse could not help but rant as she worked, “I think I really made Dr. Hemingway angry this time. When he saw me just now, he didn’t smile at me like he always used to… Ms. White, I know that you’re quite close to Dr. Hemingway. Do you mind helping me out here? I really didn’t mean what I said just now.”
“You don’t have to worry about it. Dr. Hemingway isn’t one of those calculative people. Just do as you’re told and follow his orders, it’ll all be fine in time.” Sophia assured her.
The nurse nodded dully, still wearing a worried look on her face.
Not knowing how long Dr. Hemingway would take, Sophia decided not to wait for him. Instead, she headed to the operating room with Nicole.
The operating room’s doors were shut closed, meaning that James’ operation was still ongoing.
The two of them sat outside in the corridor and waited. “Soph, what do you think about Dr. Hemingway?” Nicole asked.
“Nicole, are you trying to ask me if I would like Dr. Hemingway if I didn’t have Charles?” Sophia asked back.
Nicole hesitated slightly before nodding her head.
“There are no what if’s. The fact is that Charles is already in my life and I have feelings for him. Currently, I’m not considering anyone else. I can’t imagine having feelings for anybody else than Charles,” Sophia said honestly.
Nicole let out a sigh and kept quiet.
“First, you told me all the unkind things that Charles has done to me. Then, you keep complimenting Dr. Hemingway. Nicole, are you trying to matchmake me and Dr. Hemingway?” Sophia had always wanted to avoid this topic, but she knew that at this point, there were some things that were unavoidable.
Nicole looked straight into her eyes for a moment before averting her gaze. “... Yes, I was considering that.”
Sophia pursed her lips and lowered her head as her fingers played with the corners of her blouse.
There was no denying the fact that Dr. Hemingway was extremely outstanding, but she certainly felt no romantic feelings toward him at all.
“Soph, Mr. Harris was the one who ordered the netizen to talk to Mom… They might not exactly be murderers, but they did play a significant part in your mother’s suicide. What are you planning to do?” Nicole asked.
Sophia frowned as all her thoughts swarmed through her mind in chaos once again.
What to do?
She wanted to know what to do as well!
Sophia looked up and replied softly, “You don’t see what he sacrificed for me and all the sufferings he bore because of me.”
Moreover, it was not exactly easy for her to get herself out of her current situation.
With family interests and the unspoken rules of the business market intertwined with her personal life, it was not entirely up to her to do whatever she liked.
Nicole hesitated slightly before speaking, “Mom didn’t have an easy life, and I just want her to finally have peace now that she’s dead. I can help you keep this secret from your brother for a while, maybe two weeks at most. Then, I have no choice but to tell him.”
“... Okay,” Sophia responded.
The two of them then fell into an eerie silence aside from the occasional footsteps that echoed through the corridor.
“Soph.” Nicole broke the silence. “Whether it’s the Harris or Cox family, they’re both extremely complicated. Besides, let’s not forget how unjustly and ruthless Mr. Harris was. Aren’t you worried that he’ll be even cruel if he ever misunderstands you again in the future?”
Sophia gaped at her, unsure of how to answer this question.
After all, she had the same worries as well.
With her power and capabilities, it was almost impossible for her to go up against Charles! That was why she had decided to join the company, so she could grow and become a stronger and more powerful person.
Nicole’s tone softened, and her words were almost pleading as she said, “Soph, can you please leave Mr. Harris? It’s fine if you don’t want to marry anyone, your brother and I wouldn’t mind taking care of you!”
“I’m sure Charles wasn’t involved in Mom’s death,” Sophia simply answered. She really did not want to dwell on this matter anymore.
At that moment, the operating room doors opened. Ignoring the mixed emotions on Nicole’s face, Sophia stood up abruptly. “I’ll go check on Dad.”
