Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around! novel Chapter 341

Sophia breathed in heavily. She felt stuffy and stressed in her chest.

“Put me down,” she said to Charles.

Charles nodded and put her down on the floor very carefully, his eyes tightly locked onto her.

Sophia walked over and pushed away James, who was still hassling Jenny. She slammed the door shut in front of him.

“Sophia, are you crazy?! Open the door right now!” James smacked hard on the door as he shouted.

Sophia ignored him and walked step-by-step, very slowly towards the surgery bed.

She lowered her head to look at Jenny, her voice was hoarse. “Are you in pain?”

“Not at all.” Jenny smiled. She wanted to reach out and touch Sophia but had not much strength in her hand. She only managed to reach out halfway before her hand fell weakly down.

Sophia kneeled to the floor and placed her face onto Jenny’s hand.

She wondered when it happened but all she could see was a blur in front of her, nothing was clear.

The thick stench of blood in the air made her want to throw up, but she was unable to. All Sophia felt was heartache.

“I’m such a useless person…” Jenny laughed sarcastically at herself. All she wanted was to touch her daughter and she could not even do that. Her daughter had to come towards her instead.

Sterling stood at the side, wiping his tears silently.

“Mum, don’t…”

Sophia only managed a few words before she was interrupted by Jenny. “Soph, there are two people in this world that I have totally let down. One was Hellen, and the other is you.”

“My stupidity and hesitation killed Hellen and I almost killed you too. It’s giving me so much grief!”

Sophia nuzzled Jenny’s palm but ended up with a faceful of blood. “Aren’t I alive and doing well now? Mum, you can too…”

She looked at Jenny’s ghastly pale face, something seemed to choke her throat.

“Don’t cry. Soph, don’t cry. It’s making me sad.” Jenny’s voice was very soft, almost as if it could disappear into the wind at any moment.

Sophia wanted to tell Jenny she would not cry, but she felt a sob coming and could not say another word. All she could do was nod vigorously.

“I can’t help much with the situation you and your brother are in. All your dad does is criticize me for crying every day, telling me I’m useless and nothing will change even if I’m dead.”

“After I’m gone, move out with Charles. Your dad can’t use me to threaten you any longer. Sigh, I’m just a burden and I know that. Without a burden like me, you would not need to hold yourself back when it comes to your dad.”

“I’ve been seeing Hellen all this time. She told me that she’s been feeling lonely down below and wants me to head down to accompany her. Actually, I know it’s all a lie. Hellen hates me to her core. Why would she want me to accompany her?” There was a look of relief on Jenny’s face when she said this.

Once she was finally gone, she would not need to think about all these anymore.

Her family would not need to feel frustrated because of her and she did not need to tip-toe around, taking care of everyone’s feelings.

Sophia held up her head. She wanted to smile, but could not force on no matter how hard she tried. Instead, her tears flowed into her mouth. It was terribly bitter.

“Mum, I’m sorry!” If she had not treated her mum that way previously, would she have been able to stop this from happening?

“Silly girl, I’m the one who should be… be sorry. I should have… have believed you, if…” Jenny used every ounce of strength in her to lift her hand to touch Sophia’s face.

She did not manage to finish her sentence.

Sophia watched as Jenny’s hand fell limply. Her heart felt like it had been torn apart. It hurt so much, she could not breathe.

She grabbed hold of Jenny’s hand and placed it back on her face. “Mum? Mum… Mum… Mum…”

The woman’s eyes were closed, but there was a smile on her face. She looked like she was sleeping.

However, Sophia knew that this woman would no longer smile at her, nor call out ‘Soph’ to her.

Sophia grasped tightly to the front of his shirt and cried silently in his arms for quite a while before saying, “Let’s get out of here.”

The air was filled with the smell of her mother’s blood. It was making it difficult for her to breathe.

Her knees were weak and she could not move them at all. Charles carried her out instead.

Sophia stood next to the window in the hallway as she looked outside quietly.

What was her mother thinking about when she stood next to the window?

Jumping out of it?

If she had paid more attention to her mum or if she had been more alert when she went to sleep last night, or maybe if she had not made things worse between her and her mum, would she have been able to stop this from happening?

Charles hugged her from the back and kissed her gently on the head. “It’s not your fault. You’ve done your best.”

Sophia closed her eyes and allowed her tears to run freely.

How could this not be her fault? If she had not made the decision to invite Madam Johnson over, this day might not have come so soon!

Victor was passing by and spotted Sophia and Charles. He got the nurse to leave and walked towards them.

Sophia and Charles were hugging each other, so he coughed lightly. “Miss White, today is the date for your treatment. Would you like to have the treatment now or have it done downstairs?”

“Let’s do it another day,” Sophia replied.

She did not look at him and Victor could not see her expression. All he heard was that her voice was hoarse. It might be from excessive internal heat.

He did not push the subject and only requested her to take care of her health as he turned to walk away.

Halfway through, he turned back again. “By the way, Miss White, my mum had just contacted Dr. Sanders. He had a last-minute out-of-town research cancellation and should be able to see Madam White this afternoon for an initial diagnostic.”
